psychiatrist is usually a more medical avenue. pills and therapy,
or other treatments and therapy. usually because of a real and
concrete psychological disorder.

psychologist is a lot more just talking and dealing with stuff on
a level that does not have to be linked to concrete psychological
disorder.

counsellors are usually more of an aid to support you on your
daily routines and kind of keep an eye on you.

I'd pretty much go along with that.

I think the training for each is quite different too.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who sub-specialise in psychiatry, and therefore have a medical background, can prescribe drugs etc

Psychologists are trained in psychology only (not medicine) and tend therefore to have a scientific background, a lot more theory based.

Counsellors can pretty much be anyone (these days lol) for a long time there was no formal training other than that pertaining directly to the job in hand. I think now you can probably do a degree in counselling (?)

I thought a psychiatrist is more research related, dealing with how the brain works, and the structure of it. So the equivalent of the professor
A psychologist is the one who treats patients, more like the clinician.

I agree with Isten on the counsellor bit.

As Predom said, a psychiatrist has to train as a medical doctor first. So they have to take the usual route of medical training then they specialise in psychiatry. A psychiatrist can conduct research but they also diagnose and prescribe medication to patients. A psychologist doesn't need to train as a medical doctor.

A clinical psychologist doesn't prescribe drugs and tends to deal more with anxiety and depression, neurosis rather than psychosis. They need a general psychology degree and post graduate training.

I enjoy what I'm doing now, it's still an interesting subject but I'm not cut out for it. anyhow, I still use some of the skills in teaching. I loved art too much to pursue it. I've still got all my psych books.

This is true. However, they often do deal with psychosis (though your use of the word "tends" probably means you knew this - I'm not sure). smile
