[Unacceptable picture snip - luv4u] Tad harsh perhaps? Still, I think I bugged Herman a little yesterday. By the way, that Prince engrish thing is too funny.

i totally think we are in the beginning or middle of what will later be widely seen as the "gaysploitation" period. it happens, all part of foreward motion. it's a lot less worrysome than the minstrel versions before this. Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton

There are some really good contributions to this thread. I see the point of them all.
On the one hand, the visibility we see is trendy, cartoonish, somewhat patronizing, forced and tired. In a nutshell -- overexposed. On the other hand, it's hardly comprehensive and, therefore, not thorough enough. I mean, if I believed the common currents, I'd think I was the only gay black dude on earth who 1) isn't on the "DL" , 2) is HIV-, and 3) doesn't have some young white man on the side (FYI to my white LGBT bruhs and sisters: That's not to be taken as a jab. I'm making a political point). As Imago suggested, we all perhaps need more representation, just free of all the marketable fakery and trappings of Hollywood or Washington D.C. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

For years, hip and wealthy straight people have looked to the gay community for its fashion and provocative lifestyle. Whatever the gay trend will soon become the popular trend. This exchange, while beneficial to both parties, is a rather superficial one. Take this relationship, add the exploitive mass media and what do you have? Plain and simple. Gay flash sells. The gay orthodox, families, activists, accountants, lesbians without lipstick, drug free, gays who don’t party or can’t dance, don’t bring ratings or sell clothes. Not marketable, not seen. Well, there is an overexposure of gay makeover/reality/dating advice/whatnot -shows where the gayness is accommodated as an "exotic" spice to the approach. At the same time, the heterosexual participants in these shows often go for the most typical straight stereotypes. Wtf?
On the other hand, does anyone really ache to see a gay version of "Emmerdale"? Or "Lassie" for that matter?

We've done these threads before, we as in the gay mafia
I'm not terribly troubled with how we are portrayed on TV. I see it as a springboard for real life. And Miguel is right, it's nowhere near as troubling as the minstrel version before us. I was listening to a show on NPR and it was discussing a new movie called "Happy Endings". The director of the show was telling about how he adopted a child through this program that hooks up mothers wanting to give their children up to adoption to gay couples. He asked her why she considered taking that route and she said that she and her mom watch Will and Grace and see how funny and fun and loving the characters were and she said that she felt that kind of person deserves to be a parent. I know some will label gaysploitation programs as propaganda, trying to convert the masses. Whatever You gotta start somewhere and making us "less scary" as people to the Average American is a start 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740
