I had a lot of friends, but I wouldn't really consider myself popular. The whole high school caste system was so petty and juvenile, and I even thought that back then. As a freshman and sopomore, I was on the cheerleading squad and considered "cool", but then as a junior, when I got tired of cheerleading, I was considered a lot less cool, lol
'Cause your friends don't dance, and if they don't dance... well, they're no friends of mine.

In the trusest sense of the word 'popular', I suppose I kind of was. By my senior year I had pockets of friends here and there. I had my drama-kid friends, my nerdy classes friends, my freak friends that I hung out with at lunch (and would likely have been most associated with by outside folks) and my boyfriend's freak freinds that I hung out with outside of school. That adds up to quite a few people.
But I wasn't interested in sports, didn't go to any games or dances (except prom, damn you Molly Ringwald!) and generally could have cared less 'bout the supposed 'popular' folks. In fact, some were quite mean to us. But then, they were the younger ones. By my senior year a lot of that crap seemed to fall by the wayside. I watched girls that called me names and wouldn't have been caught dead talking to me my sophmore year suddenly sidle up to me to tell me my boyfriend was cute, compliment my shoes and ask if I knew where to get comps to First Avenue. I resented the heck out of them at the time (this was the year that grunge really hit hard and damnit I was an outcast first and for real!! giggle ) but now I just look back and laugh.

i went to an all boys catholic high school. And not knowing you're gay but the other boys picking up on it..or at least my differences made me very unpopular. Things changed dramatically in my last year.

Funny how life does little turn arounds like that...as I have MANY friends now and am quite popular.

Now I am getting flashbacks to softmore year. I made a friend...that was also probably one of the most unpopular kids in his grade above me. He actually ran for Class President of the senior class and won! However it was all a big joke on him. ANd I was made fun of as that was one of my friends and we were associated with each other. I don't think that it hampered much between us, however I would say that it was a reason we didn't hang as much.

I'm not sure at what age you go to high school but during my first six years of school I was pretty popular. Year seven to nine I was probably considered a geek. Then year ten to twelve I was confusing the hell out of people since I was doing well at school and at the same time doing all kinds of crazy and fun shit with my best friend at the time, a gay guy. For one thing the others couldn't understand how I could study and have fun at the same time, secondly they couldn't figure out how I could have such a close friendship with a gay guy without being gay or bi myself.

Same here. I still have the occasional nightmare of having to return to high school omfg I didn't talk much, but when I did talk about the things I liked (like horror films), I got some awkward stares. On top of that, my younger brother got teased because I was gay. I wasn't even out at the time, but it was obvious enough apparently. It still bothers me that he was teased about this, and not me. Most of the time though, I was just very quiet. But I had my music, my books, my movies and my family to keep me sane. smile Awful time, but I don't really look back at it. I'm glad to be where I am.

Other than the gay-related stuff, you sound exactly like me. biggrin

I was a total bookwork/nerd on top of it. But hey, the good life ends after high school for many of the popular kids, and it begins for the rest of us.

lol To make it more like you, I was so into Rhythm Nation 1814 at the time. I wore that album out, especially Lonely. That was one of my wallow in sadness high school songs.
