I think I'll say something to the next check-writer at the grocery store. Maybe something like - "Hey, did you write a check for you 8-track player?" (hahahah! so funny! get it? It's because 8 track players are old!!! Hahahahah! Anyone? Is this thing on?)

GOOD ONE! hah!

And then the clerk has to page the store manager which requires waiting in line. I just go to the next check out.

I remember this. It's because these people write so many checks to grocery stores per week. There's a limit.

When you use a debit card, you need to tell them to charge it as credit, not debit. When you charge it as debit, you get charged a fee much like you would if you used an ATM. When you process it as credit, the store gets the fee to process the credit transaction. If it ever prompts you to enter your PIN number, that means its trying to process it as a debit. Usually if you just hit the cancel button, it will ask you if you want Credit or Debit.

I LOATHE people who take forever to check out. If there's a line of people behind you, now is not the time to balance your checkbook, chat with the cashier about the weather and your grandkids, and putz around.

There's a special place in hell for people like that.

If low on money its better to write a cheque, cos paying by debit card the money comes out of your account that instant, yet cheques take 3-5 working days to clear, so sometimes it is better to write cheques.. biggrin

What about those people, such as my best friend, who have checks but no debit card?

I've had a debit/credit for near a year now, but not everyone gets one just because they'e got a checking acount. Example, I have a checking account at First National Bank in my hometown, and THEY won't even give you one until you've had your account open for three months.

The place I have my savings account, you have to wait six.

My account at 5/3, I had no wait. It came in the mail two weeks later.

Check writing comes in handy when you don't have any money in the bank.

I don't anymore. I used to when I could write a check and it wouldn't show for a couple of days. Now it's just like using a debit card. They take the money out right away. DAMN technology, damn it to helllll!!!!

My bank does not charge any kind of fee when I use my debit card cuz of the kind of account I have. If you have to pay fees you might want to see what options your bank has in that department. It could save you $$$, not just in fees but from having to re-order checks as well.

I use my Charge.

I would rather not use my credit card to buy groceries, like I don't want a big bill at the end of the month and worry about how I am going to pay it. At least it's paid for now when I use my debit, I then know how much money is in the bank that I have to budget with.

my account gives me a 500 dollar overdraft privelege, so i can write checks up to 500 negative in my account, it's like a little cushion if things get tight.

falloff For real. I can't believe people are that annoyed by having to wait a minute or two for somebody to write a check. If you're in that big a hurry, maybe you shouldn't be at the grocery store in the first place.

If you go to high in grocery stores, the grocery store's registar writes the check out for you and all you have to do is sign.

be careful about this....most retailers and grocers changed over to e-check systems that withdrawl the funds overnight...i posted a thread about this change when it went into effect earlier this year.....

i use amex for all my purchases....then i pay it off at the end of the month..it helps me balance my budget as well as helps me rack up reward points....

Charter One offers a MegaRewards program for your debit card. There's some fees involved, like a $25 annual fee, and $5 each time you cash in your points for something, but you can still come out ahead. I cash in my points for $50 gift cards several times a year.

Debit card is easier.

Debit Cards may be easier however it does more damage on your checking account with fees. So it's more econicmal to either Charge your grocery bill or write a check. At the grocery stores where I live, if you have bonus card, you don't have to wait to get check approved, you get store discounts which is cool, and the registar prints out your check.
[Edited 7/20/05 1:41am]

I always here people say "You're going to charge your groceries...". Why the hell not? No, I'm going to suck it out of my checking account as fast as possible rather than putting it off. Get a life!
