I know my wife loves these books, and she is very excited, which is nice.

She also loves the Terry Pratchett "Discworld" series too...do you read those..?

Now THAT is a good series to get into, as they are up to almost 30 books now, if I am not mistaken, so it will keep you occupied for a while!

i've never waited in line at midnight for anything... not for conert tickets, not even prince's albums.

but i'm planning to drop by the booksellers tonight at 12:01 for a copy of the sixth book in the series.

j.k.rowling has done a phenomenal job on these books. i admire the heck out of her and cheer her on because in terms of sales she's become the number one writer of all time. she's outselling the bible,s shakespeare....everyone.

it's truly amazing

Why not wait til the next day, it's not like they'll run out of the fuckers. confuse

My thoughts exactly.... confuse

actually that's not true. i've read that those who called in to reserve a copy will get one, but for everyone else it's 'while supplies last' so there may be delays for some people

order of the phoenix took me two reads to appreciate fully. it's much more complex than the prior five books, and in it harry is a whole lot angrier. when you think about it though, harry's anger can be explained by the fact that he's psychically linked to voldemort.

i agree harry was much angrier and the book was darker than prior volumes. but then again wouldn't it totally suck to have an evil wizard constantly trying to kill you and your pals? Order of the Phoenix begins after goblet, where harry watched cedric die at the hands of voldemort and his evil minions. harry spends most of the duration of 'order' being attacked by dolores umbridge, an evil creature who forces him to endure torture while she tears hogwarts apart.

plus, he's going through puberty and then at the end harry finds out he's been pre-ordained for involvement in an 'until-the-death fight with the dark lord....
i agree order was darker but imo it was one of the better installments. more adult and complex. just my 2c

well, i'd like to see lily and james come back. i think they really are his parents because harry sees them in the mirror of desire (erised) and since the mirror only reflects his heart's desire, which is to see his parents, i don't think dumbledore is his parent.

but if voldemort can come back i don't see why lily and james can't. also, i'd love to see neville's parents restored to sanity.

I think they need to quit sending Harry back to his Aunt, and Uncle's house, for more abuse.

thre reason why this happens is explained in order of the phoenix. it's for harry's safety because his aunt's house is deemed the only safe place where voldemort cannot kill him.

I won't be in line at midnight, but I will get around to reading it before too long.

I've enjoyed the series so far. Yes, some of it is derivitive of Neil Gaiman's Books of Magic (he even sued her over it, eventually settling out of court), but it is still quite enjoyable.

Oh, and has anyone seen the trailer for Goblet yet? It is FANTASTIC!!!

hmmm. i just checked out the gaiman books - they look cool and as you mention there appears to be a resemblance between timothy hunter and harry potter...

interestingly rowling was involved in litigation with nancy stouffer, the lady who coined the phrase 'muggles' and whose hero is named 'larry potter':
i think the harry potter books contain a lot of commonly used fantasy and mythology. they're a sort of conglomeration of many legends into one

Can't say whistling
Anyway, it's pretty good so far, though nothing major has happened yet.
(I'm up to Chapter 10, 'Snape Victorious'.) Lots of history and set-up mixed
with the teenage trio's relationship issues. I can see why J.K. Rowling almost
called the second book 'The Half-Blood Prince', this book is very much linked
to 'The Chamber Of Secrets'.

OK, I've finished it now, and I really liked it.

Now I've got to wait for who knows how long for the final book!

I must admit, I'd already heard about some of the plot points in the new book
a while back, so I was really looking forward to it. When the opportunity came
to get a copy early, I jumped at the chance (it was only by a couple of days,
so I don't feel too guilty). it certainly sets up things for the final book,
and I liked the way it links back to the Chamber of Secrets. Even though I
kinda knew what was gonna happen at the end, it still managed to give a few
surprises, and the way certain plot points were double bluffs was good too.
It also seems like there's an awful lot to fit into the final book.

My 14 year old daughter is 1/2 way through the book..... 7 of her friends have finished it. They report it is solid rubbish! They feel she has diviated from her writing style and the story went nowhere. Without spoilers....anyone?

I wouldn't say it was rubbish, and I also wouldn't say that it deviated from
her usual writing style. I would say that this book feels more like the earlier
books though. After the events of the Order of the Phoenix, this one seems
much more grounded in schoolife at Hogwarts. The war with the Death Eaters
becomes something just read about in papers and heard about, rather than
Harry and his friends being directly involved with. As a whole, this book
very much sets up events for the final book, and you do find out a lot about
Voldermort's beginnings. All the real 'action' happens at the very end, by
which time certain things happen that change things forever.

well that's still a big fat no no no! i doubt j/k/ rowling would be happy but i won't tell smile

i hear what you're saying about setting the final book up for a lot of action. that sucker will have to be about 2000 pages long to accomplish everything.

i don't want to spoil what happens for those who haven't read the book yet but i can't help wondering despite the events at the end and the shock suffered by our characters didn't you feel that perhaps the defense against the dark arts teacher was doing exactly as ordered by his headmaster?
