I do actually laugh quite a bit as I talk, if the topic isn't serious...so typing "lol" helps convey what it would be like if someone were talking to me in person.

Plus, it reads MUCH better than "I just smiled right now, and almost laughed, because I thought what we were saying to one another was quite humorous, but it wasn't quite a laugh, but close to one.
