YOUR PERSONA

Ok, I'm not talking about on the org or other websites here, but in your everyday life away from the internet.

Do you have a persona you aspire to? Do you see people who you admire and think 'I wish I could be like them'? Do you then take steps to try to achieve your desired persona? Do you consider this disingenuous or simply worthwhile striving for self-improvement?

Or do you simply go about your life and whatever personality manifests you accept and are content with?

Do you consciously try to fit in with other people, or conversely try hard to be different?

Isn't trying hard to be unique absurd and futile?

Is spontaneity lost when trying to achieve a certain persona?

A lot of questions, to be sure. Your thoughts, if u will.

My philosophy has always been if you're trying, you're trying too hard. Personality, persona what have you should all just be natural.
Of course, self-improvement is kinda another thing, though. If you're an ass, there's nothing wrong with learning how not to be.

My only goal is not to be an asshole to folks. At least to those who don't deserve it. I want peace and happiness. That is all. I will do anything to achieve that in my surroundings. If folks are fed and happy, what could be wrong with that? A fat belly is a happy belly! Simple.

O.K.

I guess I’ll bite.

There is nothing unique or original about my personality. It is a deliberate invention that I cultivated over years through imitation, studying those I admire, and practice.

Every gesture, every nuance in my countenance, is but a practiced deliberate manifestation of my desire to be this-or-that person.

In this sense, I do not find or view myself as “original” or “unique”, because I’m obviously not. My real life personality is slightly different from my org personality in that I seldom reveal much about myself on this site, except the happy-go-lucky side of me (which actually is genuine, if not omnipresent). In real life, I am shy, hard to read, and often avoid crowds unless drunk. In real life, I can be horrified by many things.

But yes, I constantly look for people to imitate.
At work, I imitate my former boss who was such a bitch that she ended up winning all her negotiations.
On the org, I imitate 2the9s ( I still don’t’ know why) because he is consisitantly funny, if not all together pleasant.
At home, I imitate the late Julia Roberts, Martha Stewart, and Ghandi.

At this moment, I really need to leave this cold ass lobby and get something to drink.

I've had a few people tell me I'm intriguing or mysterious. I really don't see myself this way and wondered whether I'd been trying to cultivate this persona or whether I do just possess these traits. Certainly being thought of as mysterious flatters my ego somewhat and it's not something I dislike. However, away from the internet I see myself typically as rather unmysterious and very simple. If I were to try to push this side of me forward more would that be just as contrived? I suppose that different people take you different ways and there's nothing wrong with that.

smile Well, I did agree with your thoughts. The wishing to be like you was facetious in the sense that it would contradict with agreeing to your thoughts on the subject. That's not to say there aren't things about you that I admire, of course.

How could you not be unique? This applies to sammij too, and I'm simply playing devil's advocate here, but isn't striving not to keep up with others and not be like them just as contrived?

Yes it is. There's a very long story behind that. It all started when I was just a young boy growing up in Woodmancote, a small village near the spa town of Cheltenham. Cheltenham was in fact the summer residence of the royal family in the last 19th century owing to its beautiful parks and renowned race course. But I digress. Let's keep this on topic folks. nod

The thing is, ultimately we can't help but be unique. Yet part of me sees how people strive to be different, while every conceivable personality, choice of physical appearance, style, and intellectual outlook ends up uniting you to one group or another of similarly conceived personas. In this sense it would appear impossible to be unique. It's a paradox, I guess.
