All the english ppl - HELP!

Hi guys,
I need your information. I´d like to go to UK to work there for summer, but I have few problems. I have some friends in Bridgewater, which i have no idea where that could be, but they are unable to let me live in at this moment, earliest in a month or so, which might be too late for me to go. So I would like to go right now, but I have nowhere to live and no job. I´d like to go there - somewhere near Bridgewater so I can come and move over to their place once that´s possible. What would you recommend? Should I go? Is it too risky to go just like that? Is it easy to find a job and a cheap accomodation? What accomodation would you recommend? I am going alone.

What is the pressing need to go NOW all about? Do you have a reason to be there?

Just trying to establish if Dag's wanting to go there has a specific reason. Most often pressing needs like Dag's "I would like to go right now, but I have nowhere to live and no job", are brought on by the wrong reasons.

That's all.

No, I meant that maybe Dag is running from the cops.

LoL

I am TOO hung over for any kind of attempts to humour, hehehe.

Except maybe the butt-slapping kind, but I won't trouble you with that.

It really depends on quite a few things:
- Have you a work permit?
- If yes, what are your skills? (people like hospital workers and teachers are in demand over here so it may be easier for you to find a job in those areas); if no, you might find it difficult to find work as a lot of employers receive heavy fines if they hire people not eligible to work here, and most people (British included) have to produce proof, eg a passport, if they find a new job. I know people do work here without documentation, but I don't know how they do it.
- The work situation here also depends on the area you are going to. In some areas it's much easier to find work than in others. You would really need to find out more about where Bridgewater is for any of us to help you.
- Regarding cheap accommodation, again it depends what part of the country you're heading for (could you ask your friends which county Bridgewater is in?). If you are working anywhere near London, forget finding something cheap unless you are willing to stay in a youth hostel. It would be cheaper for you to rent a flat or a room, but most landlords require 3 or 6 month leases as a minimum. If you know which part of the country you'll be staying in, I'm sure some of us here can find you more information - it may be that one of us lives in the location and knows of good hostels or hotels. (I would suggest the first place to start looking, though, is the YMCA website).

Best of luck!

thanky ou very much for this. Well I ain´t looking for some type of professional job - like teacher or something like that. Although I do teach here English I wouldn´t dare to do that in England. What I am looking for is some summer job for students, like cleaning in hotels, helping in pubs etc. I don´t think these are the best paid once, but as long as my basic expenses are covered, I am happy. At least I´d get out of here and see a bit of the world.
I asked my friends who are in Bridgewater where it is, but since it sunday and they don´t have access to the internet today, they haven´t answered yet and I cannot find it on maps on the net.

I do have permit to work here. I am czech and Czech republic is an EU member and we are allowed to work in Britain legally.

and how do you find those hostels? Are there some agencies offering you this type of accomodation or do you have to walk to streets to look for one? Sorry for my questioning.

I completely understand I was the same before I came over...no I found this particular accomodation on the internet and through a backpacker magazine nod the internet is a wonder for information of any kind so I would recommend if you haven't already really spending some time searching and writing as much info down that you'll need as you can

If there's one thing I'd say to someone coming over here as you are it's you can NEVER be too prepared...and make sure you open an account before you come over if you can oh my lawd it's impossible lol

and di you already know where you wanted to go and search accomodation in that exact place or did you just went where you found some cheap place to stay in. Plus I am going alone. I´ve heard that ppl live there usually with 5 other ppl, so did you go alone or were you a group. Cause I don´t know if I go alone, do they put you in a room with complete strangers or what?

i think Natisse is right - in order for you to enjoy a summer working in a foreign country, you should have enough money so that you wouldn't actually HAVE to work, just in case. what if you got there and hated the job? you would want enough flexibility to quit if need be.

also, if your friends can't accommodate you now, are you SURE they will be able to accommodate you later?

my recommendation would be to work at home this summer, save the money, and go abroad using that money next year.

best of luck to you!

well, it is not sure if they will accomodate me. Hopefully. They are looking for another flat to rent, cause it is too crowdy in there, but God knows how it will go.

Well guys. There´s no way I´d have 2000 to go. That´s too much money for me. I mean, you don´t earn that money over here in the Czech republic. If I was from Germany, France, Switzerland I sure could, but our country is not as economically strong as those countries so 2000 pounds is awfully a lot of money for me. That friend of mine who went with 200 took a lot of food with him etc, to save as much money as possible and he managed.

I don´t expect to like the job and just enjoy the summer there. I know I will have to work VERY hard and do my best to enjoy the little time off I´ll have the best way I can. I am fine with that. Plus even by having the lowest wage in UK, I can earn MUCH more money than I would have working here. So if I wanted to earn 2000 pounds I´d have to go and work in UK. There´s no way I can earn that over here.

I´ve just heard that to rent a flat in UK is not easy. What does it take to do it? I´v e heard that you need references, job contact etc. After how long is one able to rent a flat when you come there as a complete foreigner to work there?

I wouldn't recommend starting out renting a flat of our own...start by staying in a hostel or finding a room in a share house

it's much cheaper and MUCH easier to organise nod

Bridgwater in Somerset, England, is a market town, the administrative centre of the Sedgemoor district, and the leading industrial town in the county. Bridgwater is located on the major communication routes through South West England, between two junctions of the M5 motorway and on the edge of the Somerset Levels.

It is thought that the town was originally called Brigg, meaning Quay. In the Doomsday Book the town is listed as Brugie, while Brugia was also used. After the Norman invasion the land was given to Walter Douai (a Norman prince), hence becoming known variously as Burgh-Walter, Brugg-Walter and Brigg-Walter, eventually corrupted to Bridgwater. An alternative version is that it derives from "Bridge of Walter" (i.e. Walter's Bridge).

Bridgwater had a population of 36,000 in 1998 (up from 22,718 in 1951, 3,634 in 1801, and 7,807 in 1831). Historically, the town had a politically radical tendency, being involved in several events of note on the national stage.

Your best bet is live in bar work, usually takes care of accomodation and food, puts you in good contact with people and you get a bit of extra cash too. But in Bridgewater I am not sure. Good luck.
