Sideways is easily one of the worst movies I ever saw. There is nothing likeable in the characters, but I also can't muster up enough feeling to really dislike or hate them. I surprised myself that I even made it all the way through this movie.

thank god for you! and you too Carrie now that I see your post down there as I type. This movie STUNK! so...slow...and lame! Ok Ok..it had a couple of somewhat funny parts but...not enough for a movie hailed as "the funniest movie of the year"
terrible!

It wasn't supposed to be the funniest movie of the year. Alexander Payne's movies are always tragic and dramatic as well as funny. He also seems fascinated by how we are trapped in different phases of our life and let the phase shape our actions instead of the other way around. I find his movies extremely well-crafted but also very intimate and personal. His characters always have personality flaws, but they're still portrayed very lovingly.

it may not have supposed to have been the funniest movie of the year...but that's what's on the cover of the DVD so...intentionally or not..that is how it's billed. shrug

nod About Schmidt was fantastic. He didn't do Rushmore. That was Wes Anderson - also a good writer/director but not in Payne's class, IMO.

Marketing people...I wish there was a way to get movies to the audiences without them. They screwed up the cover for Microcosmos too by making it seem like a "cool" kids flick. Talk about giving the wrong impression. disbelief

this is true....I think it's half the reason I didn't like the movie...I was expecting to be ROTFLMAO (boxed looks for Flesho to chime in) when that never even came close to happening.
thanx though

Not really comedies, I agree. Yucky funny, maybe. Pained funny.

I don't really think of them as the same. Helen Hunt is so goody, goody or at least acted like it but what the hell happened to her career....and Dern, holy crap, is she around anymore?
