Depends...the last time I drove up to San Francisco, it took 6 1/2 hours...part of that was traffic once getting close to San Fran (it got backed up kinda bad about 20 miles outside the city)...part of it was taking the drive in a more leisurely manner to enjoy the surroundings and let the experience last. San Francisco is still one of my favorite cities in the whole world. If I could move back there, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I lived there in high school and I always want to move back. My sister lives there now though, so I go visit about twice a year still.


I would go if I were you.

I love, love San Francisco.

Does anybody take HWY 5 down to SoCal? It's out the way getting there from the Bay Area, but at least you can go on cruise control for quite a while.

I'm born, raised, and still live in SF. If you can handle non traditional seasons, then this is your place. Most of the summers are spent shrouded in fog, especially if you live in the Sunset, Outer Mission, or near SFSU. Summer kicks in around mid-Sept and lasts for about a month. If you want heat, it's only a 20 min BART ride or car ride.

In order to get around the city, I recommend taking the bus and BART (yay strike was averted). Parking is an expensive pain and nobody knows how to drive around here. Hopefully you will be living in a 'hood that has multiple buses running throughout. If you have more than one, then you will be fine. Cars are good for weekend trips outside of the city.

There's always something going on here. We are in festival season, so check out any 'hood festivals coming up. There's always free concert at Stern Grove on Sundays. Just get out and explore and learn some history along the way.

People are always interesting. From the business types to bike messengers, to homeless. If you aren't used to city living, you may be in for an awakening, but for the most part SF is pretty laid back.

Exactly, snoresville!!! It's a boring drive. At least hwy 1 has the ocean and a few little towns. It's a tradition for me to stop and get either lunch or coffee in Paso Robles on the way to L.A. It's fun to stop by the beaches too.
