ya got a trader joes nearby? seriously. skip the starbucks. go to trader joes for your beans. there's a kind i like that i think is called "mellow note" - i've been buying it faithfully for the past year and i love it. it tastes like strong coffee but it's really pretty mild, caffeine-wise. their french roast is great too, if you like the strong stuff.
i'm also a big fan of the french press - i haven't used an electric coffeemaker in a long, long time, and i don't miss it. you can usually find a bodum for under twenty bucks at the store or online.

International Creams are good. My favorite is Cinnamon Hazelnut.. Cinnamon Hazelnut is yummy I also enjoy the Cinnamon Vanilla one. I will add chocolate milk to my coffee to make it like a cafe mocha when Im at work and its great, and most chocolate milk is 1% so thats even better! I agree with Carrie on the grinding your own beans thing...keep the beans in your freezer in a container and it will bring out the flavor more too. Im not sure what kinds of coffee are good down there but if you ever come up here I'll take you for a really good cup

Byron said: Ok, I hate to admit this (and I'm sure Muse will be delighted to hear it), but I'm kinda getting hooked on coffee now... Mind you, I had perhaps 10 cups of coffee my entire life before Sweeny came out here last year and brought a coffee maker with her..lol..and my dad staying here caused me to actually use the thing every morning. We'd have a cup of coffee together everyday...which turned into two cups for me... ...Now, I find myself actually looking forward to a cup of coffee, even during the day. This is madness, I tell ya...madness.
But...I'm such a coffee novice that I don't have a clue as to what brand to buy, what creamer to use...or is milk better? (I can't stand straight black coffee...not yet anyway, give me time)...are there "things" I can add to the coffee grounds and make it taste more unique?? What about freshly ground coffee beans? When I go to the store, I just stare blankly at all the coffee brands on the shelf...do the color coded rankings on the side of the can really mean anything, or are they just there to make coffee morons like myself feel as if they're buying the smooth "roasted blend" over the darker "oven roasted"?? So...list some coffee suggestions (other than "Go to Starbucks") for me to consider and try...I need assistance. (*Wonders who will be the first to post "Go to Starbucks" thinking that will be funny... ) It was the Tim Tams wasn't it LOL .....

Coffee!
Fresh ground anything is generally better than preground anything. If it comes in a tin can, it's bad. If a grinder is too much hassle, go someplace that will grind it for you and buy small amounts. . .not more than enough for a week or two at a time. Go to a good coffee shop and sample different roasts. I like dark, earthy coffee. Some people like it lighter, including most newbies. I also prefer to french press coffee rather than drip brew it. Makes it richer. And yes, it's normal to pay $10 per pound or more for decent beans. Sorry. My creamer of choice is Mocha Mix. I buy good coffee and I don't like creamer that masks the taste. Mocha Mix is creamy, but the flavor is light.

i usually don't pay more than about six or seven bucks for a pound of beans - trader joes has really good prices on coffee (the stuff i get is 4.99 and i think it's for a pound and a half), and lots of bulk coffee places have sales on different kinds of coffee. plus the cool thing about the bulk places is that you can get 1/4 pound for just a couple of bucks if you only want to try out a certain flavor or variety.
one thing i learned the hard way - orange flavored coffee beans? don't do it.
