This is also my motto. More or less, if you eat food in moderation and don't overdue it then, you are ok. But, the problem is that society tends to overconsume meats and eat less vegatables which is unbalenced.

Add in all the chips (french fries) and the lack of exercise and you have a winning combination!!! I'll leave graffiti where you've never been kissed

In response to Nero, this type of comment does make me defensive and I'll explain why. I have never come across any vegetarian or vegan who has preached to me on the subject. Never. I have, however, come across people who have derided me and tried to convince me that eating a vegetarian diet is not healthy and some even go as far as to tell me I'm stupid to follow this type of regime and that mankind wasn't meant to eat a vegetarian diet. On that basis, I think I am right to respond to this thread and that my comments on the subject are as valid as anyone elses. I get tired of justifying my viewpoint on this subject. It's my right not to eat meat and I defend it. To say that there are people who force vegetarianism on others just isn't telling the story as it is. We are by far in the minority and sometimes we get pushed to defend ourselves. Maybe it's different in your country but where I come from I don't come across militant vegetarians. I haven't seen vegetarians here preaching to others either. I've seen the odd thread where people have asked for recipes or discussed meat-alternatives, but the only threads I can recall where the debate has been opened have been from meat-eaters criticising us. I just want people to stop judging other people and it seems that us vegetarians are a minority that it's ok to pick on. to a degree you're both right in your own way, IMO. no one needs anyone elses lifestyle choice rammed down their throat. suggestions should always be acceptable however. tolerance is key.

Couple of things to say on this one.
I used to be a vastly more annoying vegetarian than I am now. I don't think I was wrong. I think that the individuals who are suffering from inhumane treatment are unable to speak up for themselves, and it's fine for concerned humans to do so. I was, and still am, willing to have the debate. And I'm GOOD at the debate. I'm convinced that I am on the winning side of it, philosophically. What I've figured out with time, though, is that I have to respect that people don't all have the energy or inclination to give a damn. And there are lots of other causes, lots of other wrongs in the world, that I'm NOT out fighting or going to great lengths to change via my behaviors. I pick the ones that I feel strongly about, due to whatever personal inclinations I have. Other people are gonna do that too. Hopefully the collective result is that problems in this world occasionally get solved by the people who are worrying about them. On the veg issue, lots of people are more aware than they used to be, the fake meat section of the grocery store just keeps getting bigger, and the medical research showing that plant foods should be the mainstay of a healthy diet only gets more solid, so I feel ok about settling down into a position where I avoid animal products myself, am happy to explain to others why I do, but don't feel the need to jump up and down and scream about it all the time. There.

michael moore anyone? rosie? luis anderson? Yeah, fat vegan here. Fat vegan who eats healthy, is active, and has perfect blood pressure/cholesterol numbers. Can't make assumptions about fat folks OR vegans. [Edited 7/7/05 8:23am]

michael moore anyone? rosie? luis anderson? yes, that's because it's the overeating of processed flour and sugar that leads more to obesity than the meat. flour and sugar are unnatural things and we should eat more meat and vegetables with no pasta and no sugar
