lord of the rings :return of the king

Is the best movie i have ever seen in my life. just watched it on starz and watching it again. giant spiders, giant birds, creatures, the eye falling like the worlds trade center in the same way, good fighting especially when the dead people came on with the giant elephants. that movie is awesome.

I think it's really overrated.

The pacing is horrible. It just drags on and on and on. That ending? Good God! END ALREADY! Just when you think "Ok, now end" it finds a way to keep going and going, despite the conflict having been resolved completely.

I actually hated the dead soldiers helping. It completely took away any sense of danger to the heroes. Those dead guys just come on and easily trounce the enemy just like that.

The movie's not anywhere near as good as the hype around it makes it out to be.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

how can u say that? that movie didn't have one unanswered question like a lot of movies do. to tell u the truth, i was going for the bad people and the eye. i was sad to see smeagle die in the lava and the eye falling, but it was good no matter what. my ex hate it cause at the time we were together i talked him to death about it.

confused i find it amazing they managed to shorten Tolkien's work into just 3 hours.

my main problem isn't with the movie as a whole, but with Elijah Wood. the guy slaughtered Frodo's character! disbelief

My problems have nothing to do with unanswered questions.

Yes, there's perfect closure there, but who cares? The movie's essentially a bore.

I loved The Return Of The King.

Though I did think the ending was too long for the theatrical release.
They should have cut out all the return to the Shire bits and just gone
from Aragorn's coronation to meeting Bilbo again and going to the Grey Havens,
and finished the movie with the boat sailing into the distance.

A 30 minutes long ending for an almost 11 hours long movie isn't too long at all...
BTW, PJ left out a whole chapter from the end which (I think) would have taken another 20-25 minutes... cool

The Shire-scenes at the end are very necessary - cuz you can see that Frodo can't find peace anymore - even at his home; and you can understand why he leaves Middle Earth... smile

Oh I know why the scenes were made, and I'm also very familiar with the book
(I've read it many times over the years). But I still stand by what I said.

The ending would be fine for the extended version, but it was a bit too much
for the general public who saw the theatrical version.

Agree absolutely.

Overall, thought it was an excellent film.

And IMO, the pacing was great - far better than the other two films, especially the Two Towers which was dragged down horribly pace-wise by the Ents, which for my money just didn't work on screen.

See the extended versions of all three films. They are even better.

I thought the end looked too much like a fairytail...especially that part with Sam and his wife and children barf

I did understand that Frodo couldn't find peace anymore but why did he go with the elfs, Bilbo and Ghandalf? Where did they go?

The endings were fine for the extended cut, but for the average Joe Public who
isn't familiar with the story, the Shire sequences were the bits that made the
film 'feel' long. The way I see it the movie had 6 'endings', and it would've
only taken cutting 2 of them to avoid the common "however many endings has this
movie got?" complaints.

endings...

1. Frodo & Sam 'at the end of all things' - Fade to black

2. Rescue by the Eagles / Frodo's awakening in the houses of healing and
being reunited with the fellowship.

3. Aragorn's coronation and 'you bow to no-one' sequence.
(now the end of this sequence really felt like a proper 'ending', so you
don't really wanna push it by adding too much after this point)

4. Return to the Shire / Sam's wedding / Frodo's 'how can you go back' thoughts.
(this is the section where people started to shift in their seats. OK, the
ring's destroyed, we've had our happy ending, where's this going now? You
couldn't tell how long this bit was gonna last, so it felt longer than it
actually was. Personally I think it should've been cut from the Theatrical
version for this reason.)

5. Frodo's journey with Bilbo / The Grey Havens.
(This feels like an proper ending, gets all a bit weepy, great stuff. Personally
I think we should have gone from the end of Aragorn's coronation straight to
this, maybe via a little voice over from Galadriel to tie it up with the opening
of the first movie.)

6. Sam goes home.
(again, this is actually an extremely short sequence, but it comes after the
Grey Havens scene which really felt like a 'proper' ending. The audience again
isn't sure how long this bit's gonna go on for when it starts).

Reincarnate

I love Tolkien and thought all the movies were fantastic. However the third is my least favourite, mainly because I thought the ending was too lengthy.
