Wife Beaters... ...can we stop calling them that ? (speaking of white tank tops)
I am always taken aback when I hear the term...especially when my daughters say it. And then I said it the other day and surprised myself. It's so wrong to use that term so loosely.

Yes why? Maybe it is a language thing but here if somebody drives a truck we call him a truck driver, if somebody if plays a guitar we call him a guitar player ..... do you know what I mean?

But it's the idea of referring to a piece of clothing as a Wife Beater. Like the term means nothing. Like it's funny or light.

It makes sense. But you don't have to drive a truck to be a truck driver

I think most of us in Britain were about this thread - I wanted to say "why?" like Red did
... I still don't know what you're all talking about apart from it being something you wear. To us a wife beater is just that.

Ex-Moderator | It's not meant to glorify domestic abuse, it's just a phrase that's become common vernacular. And it's so specific a shirt type (white, tank top, usually ribbed cotton material) I don't know another more descriptive word that will mean exactly that type of shirt. It's just a wife-beater. eh. doesn't bother me. |
