do they REALLY think we buy... ... that this is an isolated case?
Second case of mad cow disease confirmed USDA says animal didn't enter food supply Friday, June 24, 2005; Posted: 4:07 p.m. EDT (20:07 GMT) WASHINGTON (AP) -- Tests have confirmed mad cow disease in a U.S. cow previously cleared of having the brain wasting illness, the Agriculture Department said Friday. It is the second case of mad cow disease in the United States. Human health was not at risk, Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns said. The animal was a "downer," meaning it was unable to walk. Such animals are banned from the food supply. An internationally recognized laboratory in Weybridge, England, confirmed the case of mad cow disease after U.S. tests produced conflicting results, Johanns said. New tests were ordered two weeks ago. Those results came back positive, leading officials to seek confirmation from the Weybridge lab. The department also performed more tests at its lab in Ames, Iowa. The first case confirmed in the U.S. was in December 2003, a dairy cow imported from Canada. "I am encouraged that our interlocking safeguards are working exactly as intended," Johanns said. "This animal was blocked from entering the food supply because of the firewalls we have in place. Americans have every reason to continue to be confident in the safety of our beef," he said. i wonder: - why will the USDA not release any information on where this cow was found, and how far the investigation of the rest of the herd will go. (including the cow's calves, who i'm sure have since been sold to other parts of the country) - should we worry about the fact that two US tests proved inconclusive, and only a test in the UK confirmed that the sample tested positive for mad cow disease? the USDA had already completed its investigation (this cow had been slaughtered in November), when demands for further tests by consumer groups forced them to send the samples to the lab in England. will news like this influence your food choices?

I really eat beef maybe twice a year. I do like chicken and fish. I can't say it has influenced me in the past HOWEVER, yes I wouldn't select red meat for the table.

y'know what's even more fucked up? i work for the usda (as a mere office clerk, nothing special). i haven't heard a whole lot about this particular case, save for in the media. i suppose i'd be hearing more about it if the cow came from someplace within the district my office works with.

cool! i guess the kind of beef you're eating is important, too. if you have a steak, obviously, it's from one cow. hamburgers can have meat from a number of different cows in them, increasing your chances of contamination.

so-called "downer cows", as this one was, are especially sad... awww. what a shameful species we are. i love cows. big old creatures munching away on grass.... i really think us humans need to get our shit together on the issue of animal abuse. i've stopped eating meat that comes from factory farms. for now that pretty much limits me to fish, since i know the fish wasn't abused. or at least i hope not...

bad beef edit [Edited 6/24/05 15:56pm] oh, i didn't know you worked for them. obviously, they have an important role to play in safeguarding our food supply. but i can't help feeling a little cynical when the people who are in charge of keeping our food safe seem to downplay the possible danger of this, after what we've seen in the UK and throughout Europe. i'd love to hear what the inside "scoop" is for you guys next week. can you keep me posted?

if i hear of anything i'll let ya know. edit-o [Edited 6/24/05 16:23pm]

This case indeed is outrageous not to worry - an unjacked thread is a boring thread! i'm really interested in understanding what it would take for somebody to stop eating beef (or meat altogether, for that matter). this case worries me on several levels, and should worry others, too.
