The N Word

Can we PLEASE have a civil discussion about this, so my shit doesn't get deleted?

How do you feel about the N word ?
Is it offensive to you?
Does it matter to you who's saying it, or is it always offensive?

My teenage daughters tell me that many of the kids in their school address each other this way - you know, "What's up,my N'er?"
And this is whites saying it to whites, for the most part. (We live in lily white NH.) My kids (who are bi-racial) both get offended by the term and will tell someone in a minute not to address them that way.

How do you feel ?

It's just a word, like fuck and bubbles. Fear and ignorance lend words power. They're two bad arrangements of letter to me.

Not off to P & R as this has nothing to do with either.....

My take is this....I get offended by it...and I can't stand the fact that my folks use it at each other. To hear a white person or any other person use it is just as offensive to me...and I will correct them on it, unless they just way too ignorant to even waste my time on.

Nigger/Boy

The first for obvious reasons...and the second just flys out of mouths of white folks out of a lack of respect for my grown up existence and to facilitate the fact that they will not respect me or see me as a man. I always correct them no matter how they take it afterwards if they refer to me ever as a "boy". I won't tolerate that shit ever. And they both can get you hurt!

I am sure no one calls each 'my nigger' where you are. It's probably more like 'my nigga'. It's just another way a culture has been co-opted. Nothing new. We'll have people here say that the word is not a big deal and we give power to it by the way it makes us angry but I can bet ya that those people are not black. We will have people from other countries on here that say that they don't understand the American problem with race when their countries have their own race problems. The word is offensive to me no matter what the color of the person using it.

i know this is an unpopular opinion to take, but i agree.

someone can call me "faggot" and mean it in the most hateful way possible. the word doesn't bother me at all. it's the person's intention that's hurtful.

words are noises and combinations of letters that we invented to describe things. that's all. it's the meaning that makes words ugly or beautiful. if we isolate certain words as hot-trigger "DO NOT USE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE" cases, then we do ourselves a great disservice, especially when taking into account social commentary in art and literature.

i will use any word in my writing that does the best job of getting my message across to a reader. if i am a good writer, i can use provocative words in a way that will not offend my reader. that's the challenge.
