stop! No more Hitler metaphors -ever!

Did anyone see the great piece on the "Daily Show" on Thursday about calling other people "Hitler" or "Hitler-like" or whatever variation on the name?

There were lots of (unintentionally) funny clips of politicians et al throwing the fuhrer's name around against those with whom they disagree.
Host Jon Stewart rightly traced this disgusting phenomenon to the build-up to the Iraq war, when all of Bush's opponents started calling him a "Hitler".

There was a funny clip of a demonstration in creeky old communist Cuba, where Castro's cronies botched a Hitler-Bush morph poster so that Bush resembled Dick Smothers instead of everyone's favorite go-to dictator.

The essence of the piece was, as Stewart said, it demeans a person's arguments whenever the "H" word gets lazily thrown around yet again.
"Hitler was the only Hitler", said Stewart.

I thought it was a nice little rebuff to those who insist on dredging up Hitler's name whenever someone does something they don't like. They should have to watch this piece first, and just maybe they'd feel a little silly.

The piece ended with a Phil Spector clip whereby he calls a D.A. "Hitler-like", and refers to his "Gestapo" henchman.
The metaphor is now so overused, it has lost all meaning, if it had any to begin with.

What is does succeed in doing, IMO, is to render Hitler and Nazism far less scary than they actually were.
Kudos to Jon Stewart and the Daily Show for another excellent piece! cool

Heavenly

I have 3 things to say on this:

1. First biggrin

2. Wrong forum biggrin

3. It happens everywhere in the world. In Israel you see it happen too. Every time there's a plan, thought, for security/peace reasons to change something that will effect many people (like moving them elsewhere) we get so see signs with pictures of a leader in SS uniforms and a tiny moustache.

it does get a little old, and i agree, it does diminish somewhat the horror of WWII.

along the same lines, the word "nazi" has become ubiquitous - the soup nazi, the grammar nazi... i use the term myself a lot, not sure if it's all that appropriate, although of course it's meant as a harmless put-down.

i'm still wondering if "nazism" is really a word... 9s, do you have any idea? anybody?

wtf? Don't drag me into this discussion, Goebbels.

I don't appreciate your Speer-like tactics here, or your Third Reichian assumptions.

well, your Stasi-esque avoidance tactics speak more of a post-Mauer, pre-Perestroyka paranoia, quite typical for the Honeckers of this world! talk to the hand
