I was outed!!!!

I know I know.....you didn't think it was possible lol But it's true!

I was at home and watching some old episodes of Desperate Housewives. My sister and her 2 oldest sons were also in the room. My Nephews are 13 and 11. During one of the commercials my sister started talking about work. She said "when I told them you were gay they said "You have a gay brother!? omg She said this in front of her sons. So now they know lol

I am out at home and open with my family but not with the kids. I don't really talk about it because it just makes things less complicated. Besides, I felt like it should be my sister's perogative to deal with her kids on the issue. Perhaps she already has. I've been out for 17 years and my mom still pretends like the family doesn't know. She's always trying to shush me when I start talking about my life and I have to always remind her that it's not a secret, that everybody knows. Well the same is true for my nephews. Kids aren't dumb. They hint around at it but I always just let it go. So now I don't have to worry about the kids knowing, cat's out of the bag.

It'll be interesting to see if any of them ask me about it. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it lol

Oh, I almost forgot the story she told me. She works at Disneyland, which is the gayest place on earth. That's why I thouught it was hilarious that any of her co-workers would be shocked that she had a gay relative. Well as an employee, she can get people in for free. So she took my brother and a friend of ours. This friend is a girl. She's 6'2" shocked During this day out at Disneyland my sister went by the restaurant she works at to say hi to her co-workers. The next time she went to work they were telling her how they couldn't believe her gay brother came in drag. She was like whofarted What?! One of her co-workers said "you're brother is so tall and he has beautiful curly hair" and she had to tell them it wasn't me but a friend. A girlfriend. She's pretty flat chested and very tall for a girl and they thought that she was a drag queen lol Oh damn falloff

I'm just wondering when my nephews and nieces will be privvy to my life. Like you I'm just leaving it up to their parents. I also will answer any questions they have and won't exactly hide it.

My brother may come up to SF and visit me with his 2 sons. I live with my partner and if they ask about the one bedroom...I suppose I'll say something, I just don't know what.

Hey, it's your home. If they ask just be honest. It's not like you have to be explicit and say what you do in there besides sleep with your hubby.

Interesting...

I'm dealing with this now, too. Or getting ready to. My nephew is 13, and my niece is 7. My nephew starts high school this coming year. He's pretty socially aware, so I don't think it will be long before he figures it out. And my niece is too wise for her own good. I dunno...

But I've always left it up to my sister as to what she feels comfortable with.

And that is exactly why I have never acknowledged it to them. I felt it was my sisters right and responsibility to choose when and where she had that conversation with her kids. They are after all her children.

It's funny because when I came out my youngest siblings were 4 and 6. They saw me dress in drag and when they asked me why I was dressing like a girl I just told them that I was going to a costume contest to try and win money. The first drag contest I entered I won $100 and I told them I had won and from that point whenever they would see me dressing up they would get all excited and tell me to win some money lol They are so well adjusted it's not even funny. Proving if you don't flip out about it, kids aren't going to either.

Cool. I think that'll be the case with my niece and nephew. They met my last boyfriend in 1998 (aside: damn it's been toooo long!), but they were younger, and it didn't really register. If I was with someone now, they would know him, and hence, they would know. But since I am single, it's not terribly relevant for them to know. It'll be fine when the time comes.

It is a bit more complicated when you have niece(s) and nephew(s). Yeah, your mom's always shushing you, but it sounds like your sister welcomes is at the very least comfortable enough with that part of you to share it with her children. And they're at an age where they can understand it. They'll probably act weird around you for a bit, because it's a brand spankin' new gay you, but they'll get over it soon.

I'm feel blessed that my nephew and niece - while they're only 5 and 2 1/2 - already know that whenever Uncle Dan comes around, Uncle Tim is also going to be with him. smile In fact, the little rat bastards remember him more than they do me.

I like the fact none of my sisters made ANY problem with me being gay towards their children. It lets them know it is not strange, just a possibility. It gives them the chance to speak up (if they want to, dare to) when they get bombarded with the prejudices many have towards gay. I am happy my sisters decided to break that chain of silence, even though it is just because I am gay. Me being gay has opened my sister's view to other sides of being alive than their own. This way they can pass that on, no matter what happens with the views and prejudices of their own children. You can only raise children, what they do with what you teach them is up to them, in the end.

Fun thing to tell; my seven year old nephew saw them BMW scooters with a hood and told his mom he thought that was SO gay. The term 'SO gay' in Holland is rather derogatory. My sister was kind of shocked. Little kids bring home alot of curse words from school. She was about to get REAL strict with him, but she asked him what exactly he meant by his remark.
He said; "Well, gay people don't have kids, so it is a GREAT scooter for just two people!"
LoL
He had deduced that two guys çan't have children without a girl and just thought it was pretty smart! The term he used he must have picked up from other people. Seven year olds do not distinct sarcasm, I suppose.

Very cute story Hamster. It shows you how kids are good at heart until someone else comes over and ruins it.

LoL, one of the words for 'gay guy' in Holland is 'nicht', which means 'niece'. I have bets going on SOME of my nephews being 'nieces'.... hehehe.

this is good news eh? i'd think it will be nice for you to be more open around your nephews and talk to them more frankly. it will help them, too, because they'll know not to buy into the party line that gay = bad.
