I basically write a lot of silly shit. My english teachers, both in high school and in college, have told me I have a lot of talent for it and should pursue a carrer in it some day. I don't really know about that, but do enjoy it, and I would like to do something creative for a living, so I try to keep my skills sharp by writing on my own from time to time.

This is a pretty good example of the kind of stuff I do:

I think you probably write a lot like my friend Sean, who really digs this site:

he says that a lot of other peoples' writing is like this to him:

What are you talking about? My posts about Tony M are COMPLETELY serious!

I read that first site, and yeah, it is kind of along the lines of what I write although I don't do a ton of dialogue. I think it's one of my weaker writing abilities; whenever I attempt it, it always comes out as being functional, but without any real personality (George Lucas would probably LOVE it). I'd like to find a peer group that could help me improve upon that aspect, as I feel like most of the people around me currently are either too nice to say anything or don't have any good suggestions.

The second link you posted reminds me of a webpage I did back in high school.

I have trouble with dialogue, too. I used to hate it and completely kept it out of my stories until I realized that no dialogue was boring. I can't seem to personalize my dialogue for each character - they all come out as the same voice! I feel like fucking Anne Lamott! If you ever need an online workshopper, I'd be more than happy to oblige.

That sounds a lot like at least one of the problems I have with dialogue. I almost always specialize it for whatever character is the focus of the story, and then write any other characters around that, in the same state of mind. Even if I feel like some of the dialogue is well written, it all seems kind of uninteresting when everyone speaks in the same fashion.

I'll keep in mind that I can come to you if I need someone to give me feedback, I'd really appreciate that! I haven't done any serious (Serious as in something with actual substance, but not really in tone) writing in a while, but I've been kicking around a lot of ideas in my head lately that I should really put to paper soon.

What do you write (screenplays, poetry, fiction, journalism, etc)
Poetry and Fiction
What do you write about?
Life, observations
What are some common themes in your work?
relationships, love, hate, satire
Have you ever tried to get published?
Hoping to finish and look into that later this year.
Were you successful?
Not yet
What do you hope to do with your work?
personal pleasure

And finally, the big one -
Why do you write?
To express feelings that can't be said aloud, to vent, for freedom.

What do you write (screenplays, poetry, fiction, journalism, etc) I kind of write lots of things. fiction; short stories and longer ones. Poetry. Essays, like Prince's view in women (still tinkering), some attepts at screenwriting, but I first want to see a great script to see how it works) and most of all; song lyrics.

What do you write about? Depends. For songs sometimes I write from the starting point of an amazing word or sentence, most often from melody though.

Stories most often start with ONE sentence. Sometimes an image. Sometimes an idea. Let me give you a few examples.
The God Machine is a story about a man that develops god-like powers and changes the face of the earth. The idea came from an image; a man sitting in a wondow-sil, wishing on a star. What if his wish came true? What woudl he wish for?
Flush is a short that came from being influenced by Roald Dahl and is about a small boy that needs to be toilet trained, but refuses to use the bowl as he sees a monster lurking in it's bassin.
Jewels In The Crown is a fantasy story that uses little magic, trolls or elfs and is about three royal children having to fend for themselves after being ousted from their birthright. It is complex to remember where I got the idea; it is a story that grew with me and probably has elements of Tolkien, Vandersteen, Elfquest, Beckman and Hickman & Weis running through it. So probably an amalgam of all the escapist stories I used to make up before I went to sleep.

What are some common themes in your work? Alienation. People overcoming thier fears.

What genre would you say you fit best into? Ermmm. I write lots of different things. Fantasy is probably the corner I would be thrown in by booksalesmen.

Have you ever tried to get published? No.

Were you successful? Lots of A's in school. I once won a writing contest and got Flush published independently.

What do you hope to do with your work? Well, sometimes, when I am content that all the words are in the right place, conveying what I want them to say I might purseu getting published

And finally, the big one -
Why do you write?
Cuz I can. Weird to answer. Dunno. Cuz I need to find an outlet to the many things rummaging around my head. Cuz I feel many of the stories that well up in me are too good NOT to share.

Fun thread.

I used to specialise in magic realism.

In fact, everybody living where I spent some of my childhood (in the southern backwaters of Magdalena) was very much into writing short stories and producing narrative that mirrored what was going around us whilst retaining a strong surreal edge.

Those who owned no bicycles or the luxury of being driven to the canal or the seaside by their dad or their uncle on weekend outings had little choice but to either stay indoors or seek refuge (and inspiration) in abandoned churches - which were full of manuscripts dating back to Colonial times - because the heat was so unbearable.

I mention this because I'm convinced that the lack of drinking water in that deprived region of the world greatly contributed to the hallucinatory slant of the short stories we dreamt up on a regular basis biggrin
