Who here writes?

What do you write (screenplays, poetry, fiction, journalism, etc)
What do you write about?
What are some common themes in your work?
What genre would you say you fit best into?
Have you ever tried to get published?
Were you successful?
What do you hope to do with your work?

And finally, the big one -
Why do you write?
I mean, like, where is the sun?

I write a lot of poetry, and some non fiction, though I haven't tried to get published, people have said I should try... I feel like most of what I write is still too intimate to share with others.....

I would love to write all the time if I could!

I do!! I plan on tryin 2 re-work some an old novella and probably turning it in2 a full novel hopefully during my winter break- so long as i am feelin inspired ofcourse!!

I've written poetry, screenplays, short stories and a few novellas. I've had numerous poems published in different anthologies- da first one i had published i guess was when i was 16. Haven't done much during da past 4 yearz as i've been studying in a different field to writing- so i haven't pursued publishing after i finished my dip in writing and editingz.

Would love 2 be in a team of screenwriters for comedy or a cool serial drama. Maybe do advertisment scripting. Let'z see hmmm

team of writers for comedy can be really really really hard. i have been in two sketch comedy groups that performed material we wrote as a group, and people have vastly different ideas of what is funny.

it's very very difficult, but not impossible. the times it works out is generally when duos or singlews within the group go write parts of it, and then blend it all in

What do you write (screenplays, poetry, fiction, journalism, etc) all sorts

What do you write about? death, love, cretins - the usual. smile

What are some common themes in your work? see above

What genre would you say you fit best into? black comedy, if you want to call that a 'genre'

Have you ever tried to get published? lurking

Were you successful? whistling

What do you hope to do with your work? just keep ploughing on

And finally, the big one -
Why do you write? the bible told me to.

What do you write

(screenplays
- I've written quite a few short screenplays. Around six or seven of them have been made into short films. I've also written one feature length screenplay. Most of my screenwriting is in English.

poetry - I've fooled around a bit with poetry in French. It's a language that just begs to be handled that way. Poetry isn't really my genre though.

fiction - Oh, quite a bit! Mostly in Swedish, but sometimes in English when I feel like my skills are good enough to do that particular story justice.

journalism etc) - I used to work full time as a journalist so yes, I've definitely done my share in that department. Some of it has been extremely dull though.

What do you write about? It really depends. Not only on the genre and the context, but also on the story itself. Most of my fiction stories and screenplays seem to take on a life of their own and I pretty much just sit down by the computer and watch them unfold.

What are some common themes in your work? I usually aim to satisfy either the heart or the brain, if not both (if I feel like they compete with each other, I usually choose to go for the heart). The themes are developed accordingly.

What genre would you say you fit best into? Again, it really, really depends on the story. I'm not saying that to seem like some kind of universal talent or anything. If I really have to find a uniting factor I guess I'd say that a fusion between naturalism and surreal elements is relatively common in my work.

Have you ever tried to get published? As a journalist, I've been published many times and like I said above, a number of my short screenplays have been made into short films. I've never tried to get a novel published though.

Were you successful? I made a living as a journalist, so I suppose that's being reasonably successful. shrug Most of my short films were well received, but you almost never get a huge deal of appreciation for short films no matter how good they are. But in terms of quality, yes, a few of them were quite successful.

What do you hope to do with your work? I hope to connect with people on an intimate, emotional level and make them think.

Why do you write? It's my duty since I've been given stories to tell. It's also one of my great passions.

What do you write (screenplays, poetry, fiction, journalism, etc)
Recently I had to write many papers for my studies but those doesn't fit into my own 'self', the non-academic Marie. I write poetry and short prose-stories which are poetic, in Dutch these are called 'proësie'.

What do you write about?
Anything that needs to be written down.

What are some common themes in your work?
Fear, going crazy, nature, love

What genre would you say you fit best into?
Poetry. I like writing prose, but my talent is too spontaneous, too hasty to write a book or something. This is my big frustration.

Have you ever tried to get published?
No. But I've won some prizes with my poems, those led to publications on a very small scale. (and some money too)

Were you successful?
My friends really like what I do, and when I perform, some strangers react very positively. It's just not good enough to deserve real respect, for something big I've accomplished I mean. I didn't, uptil now. I just went with the flow.

What do you hope to do with your work?
Touch souls, give voice to strange experiences, and finally, be remembered, yes.

And finally, the big one -
Why do you write?

I just need to answer the need in me.

It's awesome that there are so many writers here on the org! grouphug

As for me...

What do you write (screenplays, poetry, fiction, journalism, etc)
I write fiction, short stories. Some poetry, though I'm not very good at it. It's very prose-y - I'm still trying to separate fiction and poetry in my mind.

What do you write about?
I write about relationships - usually the ends of them, because I find that time to be more complicated and interesting than the lovey dovey early honeymoon stages. I also write about power imbalances, Asian American stuff (esp. stereotypes and challenging them), and lately I've been dabbling a little in gender.

What are some common themes in your work?
Well I write very unabashedly and very honestly. People say my work is funny though I never try to make it so. I'm not very kind to the love objects, and I'm not very forgiving with my main character.

What genre would you say you fit best into?
Contemporary fiction? And Asian American - there aren't enough biracial Asian authors out there.

Have you ever tried to get published?
Yes. I have gotten published in a few lit magazines here on campus. I submitted work to Glimmer Train, another lit magazine that pays $500 if they publish you! Next I am gonna work on Granta! Rejections aren't bad; it just means that I am that much closer to actually being successful!

What do you hope to do with your work?
I hope to be published - not so much for the money, but to challenge what people think. To make other hapa kids feel not so lonely. Though if I did get published I would buy a house for my aunt.

And finally, the big one -
Why do you write?
For the reasons above - and also the dying author thing, that I want to leave something behind after I go.
