Thanx everyone....I'm sitting here at work just bawling! I never thought it would be so hard...but Major was like our first baby! We bought our house and got Major right way...so it just seems quiet in the yard now...the house feels void. sad
If everything happens for a reason then I can only hope Major was a sacrifice...so that some child or person didn't get hit and killed instead. sad
He's a hero in my heart. bawl

MisterMan, I'm so sorry bout your Shep too! My Major was a pure breed, we got him from a lady who only bred her male and female twice. We wanted that classice shep look and we didn't really think we'd get that looking at his parents...his dad's coat was mostly black and his mom had long hair for a shep...all the puppies were black so we figured he'd be black but...he came out just the way we wanted him too (wouldn't have mattered either way) he was a HUGE GSD, about 110 lbs and just a big ol bear! He was so lovable and playful! and he was sooooo smart! Man o man this sux!
thanx again everyone!

I'm so sorry for you.

Don't feel guilty. There is always a chance things like this happen, but I think it's better to let them out and risk this then keep a pet and never let it out. I have a cat and live at an apartment. Every day, she goes outside to play in the surrounding gardens with other cats. My neighbours told me to keep her inside because the rumour goes there are cat-eaters living near. I'm a bit worried about that, but decided to risk it. I don't want my cat to be a sad animal staring out of the window all day.

Lots of strength to you !

OMG! I am really sorry to hear this. sad

he's a really cute dog. It's hard to give your pets the freedom to run around and play outside when there are people out there who refuse to slow down or stop if an animal runs out in the street. I've been in cars with people where they made it a point to try and run over the animal just because they were too stubborn to slow down a little so it could pass.

We have 3 dogs, and I get terrified any time my dad walks them near a main road.
