Mother Explains Fatal Pit Bull Mauling Sun Jun 12,12:42 PM ET SAN FRANCISCO - The mother of a 12-year-old boy killed in his own home by one of the family's two pit bulls says she had been so concerned about one of the dogs that she shut her son in the basement to protect him. Maureen Faibish said she ordered Nicholas to stay in the basement while she did errands on June 3, the day he was attacked by one or both of the dogs. She said she was worried about the male dog, Rex, who was acting possessive because the female, Ella, was in heat. "I put him down there, with a shovel on the door," Faibish said in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle. "And I told him: `Stay down there until I come back.' Typical Nicky, he wouldn't listen to me." Nicholas apparently found a way to open the basement door. Despite her concerns about Rex that day, Faibish told the newspaper: "My kids got along great with (the dogs). We were never seeing any kind of violent tendencies." Faibish found her son's body in a bedroom. He was covered in blood from several wounds, including a major head injury. No charges have been filed. "It's Nicky's time to go," she said in the interview. "When you're born you're destined to go and this was his time." Ella was shot to death by a police officer the day of the attack. Rex was taken to a shelter, but Faibish said she wanted him put down.

Chico319 said: i agree. and something sounds very fishy about this whole story. call my cynical, but: - why did she lock the kid in the basement and secured the door with a shovel? seems strange for a 12-year old. - why didn't she take the kid with her on her errands? - why did she keep the pit bull after it showed signs of aggression? - why did she have a female pit bull in heat plus a male - was she a breeder? if so, she had no business breeding a dog with aggression problems (not to mention pit bulls to begin with - i always get heat over this, but imo, there is no need for this particular breed to continue. and i'm an animal rights advocate!) too many questions in this very sad story. a local drug dealer was convicted of manslaughter (i believe) in the mauling death of his son by his pit bull. how many more stories like that do we need to hear before people get it?

I think maybe the main question would be - why did she lock the kid in the basemend instead keeping the dog tied down until she's back? So fine, maybe that would've protected her son, but what about other people in the area? don' they deserve to feel safe?

It also just drives me crazy when certain types of religious people rationalize something totally preventable by putting it on "God" and His "will". This lady is trying to say that it was just her son's "time to go".
(((NO IT WASN'T, YOU JUST MADE A REALLY POOR DECISION. God didn't decide this--YOU did, lady.)) It reminds me of a client I had who was pregnant and smoking a lot of weed. I warned her of some potential for the child to develop learning disabilities and brain development problems as a result of using MJ, and she went on some tangent about how "God decides" if a child is going to be born with physical and mental problems and how she'll accept it either way. I looked at her and point-blank told her that God wasn't making her smoke weed and that if her child ended up with learning disablities, in this case, it was going to be because of what SHE did. I think some people enjoy feeling powerless, being able to blame it all on God or "fate". [Edited 6/12/05 14:04pm]

i had to read a couple parts twice actually. just to make sure it said she locked her SON in the basement and not the dog. it's always the same in cases with pit bulls involved...or really any animal. the neglegent owner has a dog that injures or kills someone, and they blame the dog. "bad breed" etc..
train your pets. keep them on a leash if necessary. read up about the animal you're bringing into your home. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. owners should face prison time for this. no question about it.
