Selfish. I should have just laughed it off since it's far from the truth, but it really got under my skin. I guess we appreciate it a lot when people praise us on something we take pride in being/having and likewise get extra hurt when they say we don't have it.

I've been called so many things so many times....

I just consider the source and especially the motivation behind the words.

It's usually from someone whom I've said something not so nice to.

shrug

Otherwise, I just don't give a shit.

When I was 15 and my sister was 20 we got in a huge fight and she called me a slut. That cut me to the bone! I think because of who it came from, more so than just the word. I couldn't believe she said it. What a slut.... lol JK

Nigger/Boy

The first for obvious reasons...and the second just flys out of mouths of white folks out of a lack of respect for my grown up existence and to facilitate the fact that they will not respect me or see me as a man. I always correct them no matter how they take it afterwards if they refer to me ever as a "boy". I won't tolerate that shit ever. And they both can get you hurt!

I had the same thing as Dex. I was four or five and was in the Deep South. They had to pump in sunshine we were so far in the back woods. My cousins and I went to this park up the road and doing our thing. I didn't see the Whites only sign. These white kids came up to use and said, "You niggers better run!" I looked around and all my cousins took off. I had never heard that word before and was confused. We were the only black family in Huntington Beach back then and all my never used that one. Once the rock clocked me in the head I got the picture. When I got to the house crying my uncles took off in the truck with shot guns loaded. My mom explained to me what that word was and I was so hurt. Right after that Roots came out and I was a mess. That word cut me to the quick. It doesn't bother me as much but I will check ignorant ass folks with a quickness.

I lived in a suburb of Birmingham Alabama.
I was the only asian kid in a well-to-do middle class neighborhood. There were, of course, no black people in the neighborhood, becuase african Americans in that region of the state/country during the early 80's just didn't have higher paying jobs, if they had jobs at all.

It was my first year in the states. I was playing with my friend Spunky (yes, he was called Spunky) and his mother came running out in the front yard. She said "Spunky, we gotta go pick your daddy up--he's stuck in a nigger town"

That is pretty much when I learned the n-word. I discovered words like "jap, chink, foreigner (derogatory)" and a host of other derogatory comments aimed at me around the 3rd grade (a year later). Things got worse, It wasn't until about the 10th grade when I moved closer to the city that I realized that Racial discrimination was a shameful thing--sure, it exists in the city, but to do it in the open is a taboo.

My experiences have tought me to tolerate anyone. And I mean ANYONE who is in the minority.

the first time i remember hearing the n-word was 2nd or 3rd grade, and while i was living in tennessee.

i went over to my friend jerry's house, where he lived with his grandmother. as we came in the door from playing she held out a candy dish which had those chocalate creme drop things that look like bon-bons.

"ya'll want a nigger toe?" she asked.

i was confused and asked what that meant. she said the n word several more times in her explanation.

disbelief

thank god i instinctually knew i hated that word, i dread to think i mighta grown up to be one of the people who owuld use it.

and i still can't eat those dame creme drp things, cause all i can think of is that freaky old bitch

when i was in 5th grade and in the midst of the shitstorm that tore my family apart and knew i would soon be in a foster home, my paternal grandfather was taking me to school and told me if i turned out to be a faggot, he would hunt me down and kill me because it was better to have a dead grandson than a living faggot.

disbelief

he was also a bit of a racist too. when i heard he died, i was in the midst of writing my one man show, some of which is about him and the rest of my shit fathers' side of the family. i was ranting about how i had always planned when yhe died to get my revenge on that fuck by having sex with a black man on his grave, and my producer said he would pay for the trip and we would film it from a distance, because it would be the perfect end to the show.

but a few days later i found out he was cremated, so the fucker got the last laugh.

Heartless sad I have been called Nigger before but that didn't bother me as much because I actually felt sorry for the person who would stoop so low to try to discredit me and or affect my self image. But being called Heartless really hit me because I truly cared for the woman that referred to me in that way. I didn't realize my actions were so cruel and cold towards her and I strive to never have that type of impact on anyones life again.

no joking here. Since you didn't have a Dad or Grandfather as a strong male role model, are you feminine?
I don't think strong male role models have anything to do with sexuality. But I think the reason why I'm so fem is that my Dad and I didn't actually get a long in life.

in all honesty, i think of myself as really being in the area between masculine and feminine, cause i have traits in both and get more macho or more feminine depending on who i am around, what my mood is, etc.

because of my shitty fathers family, i was seperated from my mother from the time i was 4th grade until i was in high school, so it's not that i emulate my mother, and most of the presences in my life were masculine (often aggresively so) figures.

i tend to think it's nature versus nurture. you just are who you are, and strong or weak masuline or feminine role models don't really affect it much.

they tried their damndest to keep me from becoming gay and to try and turn me uber-macho, but my true self always shone through no matter what.
