No, How??

It was simply released at the wrong time. 1982 (the year it was released) was the year of ET and The Thing was the complete antithesis of that. The film was too pessimistic; coupled with its bleak outlook on society and 1982's relatively upbeat outlook, it was destined to fail. Critics and audiences alike hated it. It's too bad, really, because it's a fantastic film, and greatly complicates the original by Howard Hawks.

I think the film was recieved here in the Netherlands very well.
I didn't hear a lot of negativity about it!
A lot of people I know love that film nod

Wow.

Here I am thiking about how silly I felt for admitting I lost sleep over a sci-fi thriller.

But you guys have proven to be some real pussies.

Anyways, Lemme just say that I believe John Carpenter's "The Thing" is one of the best in the genre. That movie creeped me out too.

I am never scared by movies these days but as a kid I was terrified of the Child Catcher from "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and "Don´t Look Now" with Donald Sutherland scared the bejesus outta me too.

I love it, too. Shame that it was shat upon when first released. The same happened with Renoir's La Règle du jeu in 1939 - people just weren't ready! Audiences freaked out and rioted, critics lambasted it. But now it's considered one of cinema's best films ever. I guess it goes to show that it's all about timing.

For me the bloodtestingscene was the scariest. The man's head with spiderlegs made me laugh! lol

Pathetic, isn't it?
People go all mushy over some walking talking turd (E.T...) and when a really good movie comes out they snub it for being too pessimistic, says more about those idiots who hate it than the movie itself...
"The Thing" is a great movie, E.T. on the other hand...
Hated it when I was kid (never understood what was so great about it...) detest it even more now, a literal overrated piece of shit...

But what scared me the most was the opening scenes of "The Exorcist" (the whole Iraq bit... The rest was more funny than scary... Except for that voice that is...)
I stole my parents tape of it when I was about 5 and sneaky watched it with my sis and it hung with me ever since...

Oh shit! The remake was something else!

I couldn't watch the whole thing.

I was afraid of truckers for a while after seeing "Joy Ride".
We took a night trip to Canada and stopped at a truck stop and my friend was scared silly to walk the dog by the parked trucks lol

I knew I was in for trouble when the girl shot herself in the head! I was like- "okay let's turn this bitch off!"

The Exorcist was definitely scary, but the most recent movie to freak me out is "Saw". That damn movie left me with nightmares. They are making a sequel and I don't know if I'll be able to watch it. It was downright nasty.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre scared the shit out of me too.

Co-sign. When little whatever-his-name-is is outside the window scratching to get in.....forget it!!!! I think it's one of the most frightening made for t.v. movies ever. Also when they enter a room and see that man (Juliet Lewis' dad in real life) in the rocking chair. CREEPY!!!!!

There's a remake but I don't want to rent it for fear that it's going to suck. Why the hell did Stephen King agree to all the remakes, THE SHINING, CARRIE, SALEM'S LOT.

It's also my favorite Stephen King book.

Aw yeah! Salem's Lot was a trip, especially the jail scene where Drac ends up being in the cell with old dude, wasn't it David Soul? LOL! That was the first time I had seen a Dracula pic with a rendition of Nosferatu as Dracula. Nice style.

Also, The Fog scared the living shit out of me too!

I think I was six when that flick came out and I watched it at home on video with my brother, who would've been nineteen. It scared me so badly that I slept outside my parent's bedroom for a couple of weeks. In fact, I still get an eerie feeling if I don't flip the lights on immediately when I enter a bathroom.

The voice was creepy enough.

I watched it last year at my ex-boyfriend's house one evening before he got in from work. When he got in and found me mid-movie, I was all tensed up and everything, and he made a point to make fun of me over it.

It's kind of ridiculous, really, to be scared of that crap.
