Gay ROle Models? Are there a shortage of them now? Help me out here....
It seems like there is a definite shortage of Gay Role Models. Is it because there is nothing to fight for anymore? Or is it that we've gotten so mainstream, that it's not cool to be a spokesperson for something so common and ordinary.I also see the trend of the past decade where folks are coming out yet not taking any stance or becoming a voice. More like it's a raising of a hand "Yes 'm gay too" and that's about it. I cna sorta think of one person who is actively (but not proactively) standing up for our rights...Rosie O'Donnell. Anyhoo, it could be that I don't read advocate or the gay rags...so maybe I'm a little out of touch... Christian Zombie Vampires

I found another...this one sort of rates them in positivity...again...I question Rock Hudson and Liberace...I think that their avid "straightness" hurt us more than helped us. Not sure how Mattew SHepard ended on this list either.
1. Ellen DeGeneres 2. Barney Frank 3. Sir Ian McKellan 4. Greg Louganis 5. Melissa Etheridge 6. Reichen Lehmkuhl (Amazing Race 4) 7. Matthew Shepard 8. Martina Navratilova 9. What are your criteria for a "role model."
Activist? | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Ex-Moderator | I think there was/is a trend of gay celebs who come out and don't want to have to be an activist, and I sorta get that. Sort of in the vain of, this is only a part of who I am and I don't HAVE to defend myself to anyone.
Unfortunately, if no one's gonna stand up and say the important things then the movement isn't gonna go anywhere. I dunno. It's not for me to figure out. Just support. |

Activist? Maybe activist...doesn't have to be. But just someone who portrays a positive image of what it's like to be gay. I'd say Ellen is a good role model for our time. Will and Grace and Queer as Folk don't cut it...in fact they make it worse. Christian Zombie Vampires

One problem, politically, for having stars being the vocal advocates is that the assholes on the right can continue painting gay=hollywood elite. That bullshit flies so well with their constituency. It makes the issue seem trivial, as if all of us are Hollywood elitists and not just average Americans like everyone else. I wish we had more role models in the community. It would help the young generation so much. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

It does matter when we "gay" people are treated like shit all the time in public, media what have you. And there are supposedly no gay do-gooders in this world.
