AsianBomb, won't fasting lower your metabolism and cause you to gain weight quickly -- the body recognizes that the calories are just not coming in and slows down to famine mode for conservation.

I've heard that people who lose weight through fasting, have this problem

Oprah did, remember?

Of course. Fasting slows the metabolism. It's not meant to be a weight loss program.

Oprah went on a juice fast. During a juice fast the body will consume muscle at a realtively normal pace.

On a water fast, the body consumes 2% muscle daily instead of the normal 30-50% on a calorie restricted diet (juice fast really fall in this catagory).

Muscle is what determines your metabolism. Each extra pound of muscle you gaine requires 30 to 100 calories extra in order to be maintained. Likewise, losing the muscle will decrease your caleric needs and slow metabolism.

I've been fasting for 2 years off and on as needed and my weight is steadily decreasing. But I'm not an inactive person. After a fast, becuase I feel so good, I rush back into the gym and pack on the muscle as quickly as I can--this picks my metabolism back up.

The point to fasting is not to come off of it and go back to your old habbits. It's to reinvigerate you so you can make positive changes Oprah came off her juice fast (which was too long to begin with) and went back to Ribs & Potatoe salad lifestyle.
