Why are you a Vegan instead of a meat eater?

Are you a Vegan and why?

Do you eat meat and why?

I'm a pesco-vegetarian, but you didn't ask why on that. So I'm not going to answer. That's that!

i'm a vegetarian but not a vegan. i try not to consume a whole lot of eggs and dairy - i keep soy milk in my fridge and i usually don't cook a lot of stuff that requires eggs or milk - but there's no way i could give up stuff like ice cream or yogurt or half and half in my coffee.

it's really not that hard... a dairy cow in today's factory farm is as miserable as a beef cow, in my mind... but i believe that any level of awareness is better than nothing!

and really, it's a whole lot easier nowadays to be a vegan... so many food choices and alternative clothing materials thumbs up!

Because I think that the treatment of animals on today's typical "farms" is unethical.

And, on a related note, because it makes me happy to reduce my contribution to the suffering of innocent individuals who are often overlooked by society.

We are much the same in this, then. Though I've tried to give up most icecream. Sometimes, banana splits must be consumed.

i agree. but i also think that everyone who contends with the idea of being ethically aware has to come to a point where they draw a line between what adjustments and commitments they're willing to make, and to what extent a person has to reconcile the simple fact that there are some commitments that are unrealistic for some folks, for whatever personal reason.

i wish i still had the 'bloom county' comic strips where milo gets into animal rights and keeps getting more and more involved and into anti-cruelty, until he's gotten to a point where he's standing on his tip-toes on a rock, starving himself and praying for the micro-organisms he's crushing to death with his toes.

i know there are options out there to eggs and dairy. i use a lot of 'em, and believe me - there's SO much dairy stuff that's not in my refrigerator anymore that used to be staples of my diet. i've been able to live without meat for almost 20 years - no problem. but i've never been able to make that same level of commitment with dairy and eggs. i'd like to someday, and maybe i will. when i'm ready. nod

I a can't help but think of all those helpless fruits and veggies dangling helplessly to a tree or firmly rooted in the ground unable to run.
