American CLASSIC Movies - Over the TOP? Does anyone find acting in the American Classic films a little over the top? I mean, a little too much daramatic flare, facial expressions just a little too animated, and words a little too articulated?

At first, I thought you were talking about the Sly Stallone movie, which is the category of worst of ALL time.

That's the point of it, and that's what I admire about the acting in classic film. This was before method acting, which was popularized by Brando and others. It's more along the lines of stage acting which was to get the point across to the person in the back row, hence the dramatic flair, facial expressions, etc. I much prefer Barbara Stanwyck, Gene Tierney, Bette Davis, Tyrone Power, Ray Milland, Henry Fonda and others to the acting of Julia Roberts (i.e., crying on cue) and most in this generation of actors. The closest we've seen to the old Hollywood style of acting in recent years was Julianne Moore's turn in Far from Heaven, and that was a deliberate stylistic choice.

I think they are...but I think they are supposed to be...I like 'em! I turn on the AMC channel...ever now and again...especially for Cary Grant, Bette Davis, Jean Harlow, Spencer Tracy...etc. "We love you from the bottom of our hearts to the top of our souls...thank you!" Did you consciously put the two gay actors back to back?

Oh i get it now.
I thought u meant during the "golden years of hollywood" but it coulda meant classic movies more recently. I c all ur points. The thing that bugs me is the women in general. They are too melodramatic alot of the time. And cry alot? Sign of the times LOL. Its bullshit that golden age tripe. It sure was a good time for movies. Why wouldn't it be? The talkie was still in its infacy in movie years (10-20 years, as computer games are now). But there was so much more being made back then. Sooooo much crap and average crap came out. All them movies have dated. But it doesn't mean they are not good though. The scores are too samey and intrusive at times. Also no swearing, no sequels and no proper action scenes are in those movies. One of my all time fav movies is "gone with the wind". Now thats a cliche right there.

THe most annoying thing in those movies is how week the female characters are most of the time.
I saw the original War of the Worlds, and it seems like women were primarily placed in the movie to scream and wait to be rescued.

"war of the world" was a pile of shit. Brit films suck in general. "brief encounter" is ok I guess? I heard tony scott was english. Cool. Englands films on the whole tend to be about working class people. Then came that chump hugh grant.

They were more about science, intelligence and ideas then. You won't find a lick of science or originality in current SF films. Today they're more about mindless effects than anything else: case in point - The Chronicles of Riddick. thesexofit said: u missed my "little foxes" thread. More reason to not believe that you're a 19-year-old working class kid.

More reason to not believe that you're a 19-year-old working class kid. I liked "riddick". The ending of "war of the worlds" was soooo corny. Yuck. Some funny horror comes from the 50's thats for sure. Like all those teen horror movies. I cannot name one, but they involve titles like "Iam a teenage frankinstein" and are so funny.
