They are awesome

yes, they are incredibly useful

If he has a PDA or smartphone, no need to buy a stand alone unit. I have the link for a bluetooth add on.

If you are looking for a cheap stand alone unit, check the web for the Garmin eTrex Legend. It's a good middle of the road unit. They have cheaper ones also.

Did you know that GPS works by the fact that,no matter where you are in the world, you can be seen by 3 stalites at anyone time and they work like big clocks.

They workout how long it takes for the signal to get from them to you and back again and the plots an arc along which you could be anywhere...however there will only be one point in the whole world where those 3 arcs will cross eachother = your location.

The scary bit - EVERY GPS satelite is owned by the US Military and,if at anytime they decided it didnt suit for you to know exactly where you were etc, they could adjust them or shut them all down.

My only worry would be that if he's into the MC culture (not Hells Angels or anything, but you know what I mean), then he might not want to know exactly where he is at all times. It sort of destroys a bit of the fun and freedom of being on the road. It's when you make a wrong turn that you find the interesting things in life.

Just my opinion. shrug
