I've been thinking of peircing my lower lip. I don't know though. Do it. And if people start asking questions about why you got it just say "Because I wanted" Or the famous question "Did it hurt?" answer "Yes, it hurt like hell." Do you think that people use piercings to deal with that stuff, like the study says? No I don't think so. I mean there could be some that do, but I think the majority of the people that pierce their noses and navels do it because they like the look. On the other hand, people that peirce EVERY INCH of their bodies may have problems!!!! Everyone has issues. I think there's more to it than liking a certain look when someone decides to put piece of metal though their skin. But again, I'm someone who believes there's a reason for everything we do. Not that it always really matters why we do something or that we should continiously ask ourselves why, but to some people it's interesting material.

How did it hurt so much? There are very few nerve endings in the tongue, so it shouldn't hurt. When I had mine done, I could feel it, and it wasn't a particularly nice sensation, but it didn't hurt at all. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Anything in excess usually relates to some trauma though doesn't it? over eating, not eating enough, you know what I mean. Maybe people with an excessive amount of piercings, and I'm talking A LOT are trying to process something in the same way as somebody who over eats. ... Excellent point, imo!!

It was kind of uncomfortable for 2 days and then that was it. Mine is further back than some people so maybe that's part of the reason why it didn't hurt. I've had mine since 1994. My nipple piercings are a little over 3 years old. Those I would never do again if I had to. Those really really hurt. Some people didn't have a problem with their nipple piercings. I DID!!!! But it was worth it. Now I just have to wait for a slight breeze to hit them and DAMN, what a sensation!!! M MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! Well, this study was looking at people who had piercings in places other than their ears. You're sooooo mainstream! So piercing your ears is fine, but piercing something else means you've had horrible trauma in your life? Dumb. I pierced my eyebrow when I was 16 cuz I thought it was cool, not because I had a miscarriage or an abortion

I think what they're wondering due to the results of the study is if people use piercings to help themselves heal. According to the study, it's an outward expression of being able to take the pain, of being strong. I don't know what to think, just that it's a fascinating subject.

I think it's because multiple ear piercings are socially a lot more acceptable which IMO does make a difference. Traumatized people tend to show extreme behaviour. Getting an extra hoop in your ear isn't really extreme.

But you know how some people got (maybe still do get) the entire perimeter of their ear pierced? All around the cartilage and stuff? Like 10 or so? To me, that would qualify.....

I have five piercings. | |

I have 7 piercings (lobes, septum, nostril, tongue, anti tragus, rook) and have retired 7 others. I can reassure all of you that I have not undergone any traumas in my life; in fact, it's pretty much the opposite. I get myself pierced for the aesthetic - it's the same reason I change my hair so frequently. It's an instant way to modify your appearance, plus it's not as permanent as, say, tattoos. Plus it's such a great payoff when they heal up - they require LOTS of care and LOTS of time!
I will admit, however, that I subconsciously might also get pierced because I have somewhat strict parents. They only know about my lobes and nostril only - and are not too happy with the latter! I take my piercings out/put in retainers when I'm around them so they don't find out and freak on me. I mean, like, where is the sun?

And what is "socially acceptable"? It's a load of hoo hah! Cartilage piercings are a pain in my ass! It took me years to heal my helix, and by then I was so over the way it looked, I took it out. It took my rook two years to heal and I got my anti tragus pierced in December and it still looks like a holy mess! I mean, like, where is the sun?
