Who Gets Piercings?

Check out this article and tell me what you think! hmmm

"People with multiple body piercings tend to have been exposed to multiple traumas, according to a recent survey. Jonathan W. Roberti, a psychologist at New College of Florida in Sarasota, and colleagues at the University of Florida in Gainesville polled 196 college students, including 133 women, who had piercings on areas other than their earlobes (such as navel, nose, eyebrow, or genitals). The more hardship a person had expereinced--miscarriage, abortion, severe injury or illness, the death of someone close, a separation or divorce, or verbal, physical, or sexual abuse--the more piercings he or she was likely to have. Perhaps since these body adornments signify the wearer's ability to withstand being hurt, getting a piercing might act as a 'catalyst for processing' a distressing event, Roberti says".

The reasons they give happen to a large percentage of us. If it were true then everyone I know would be pierced!

It's impossible to judge the results of a study by just reading the abstract.

hmmm The study says people who dealt with that stuff the most--had a LOT of it happen--tended to have more piercings. Do you think that people use piercings to deal with that stuff, like the study says?

Yes, I was told that if I pierced my nose my foot would find closure. lol

Seriously, I didn't do it for any reason other than I like the look etc.

A friend and I went together, she did her bellybutton and I did my nose. It was a spontaneous thing and I wouldn't say it had any deep rooted psychological motive. More a fun thing to do.

People always say they do something just because they like it. That's bullshit, but I don't blame them. A lot of times we're simply not aware why we do certain things, why we like or dislike something. That doesn't mean there no reason for it.

Everyone talks like they're a psychologist, but most have no idea how the human psyche works other than the clichés they caught on Oprah or Dr Phil.

I have 3 piercings in my ears, tongue pierced and both nipples pierced. I have had no major trauma in my life. I've never been molested. I guess I'm one of the oddballs.

No I don't think so. I mean there could be some that do, but I think the majority of the people that pierce their noses and navels do it because they like the look. On the other hand, people that peirce EVERY INCH of their bodies may have problems!!!!

I dont know anyone that has a lot of piercings. Anything in excess usually relates to some trauma though doesn't it? over eating, not eating enough, you know what I mean. Maybe people with an excessive amount of piercings, and I'm talking A LOT are trying to process something in the same way as somebody who over eats.

I don't believe that! I had multiple piercings and I hadn't experienced any or the sort. I was just going through a rebeling phase lol When I was over it, I removed the piercings
