Words And/Or Phrases Your Parents Use

With my father being here over the past few months, I've been reunited with something I had fogotten about: his particular and unique words and phrases..lol smile

The biggest one he says that I associate with him the most thru my life? "Such and such a thing"...He says that as a generic fill-in for anything and everything, and he's especially good at using it now that he has dementia and memory issues... rose So, almost all of our talks consist of him saying "such and such a thing" at least once, as in "Then I talked to the people at the place...and they said such and such a thing...and I was asking the one person about the papers, and instead they gave me such and such a thing..."

Bless his heart..lol love2

So it got me wondering...are there any words or phrases that you associate specifically with your parents...things that they're known for saying within your mind and heart??...And, have you found yourself adopting these things and using and saying them yourself?? (I can report that I have not adopted "such and such a thing" into my vocabulary yet..lol)..

My mom says "whee doggers!" and "hold your horses" a lot. I love those phrases and while I know she did not invent them, she's the only person I know who uses them consistently. Sometimes she will also make a horse-like noise after "hold your horses."

Awesome thread, byron. thumbs up!

My mother often adds too many "she said"s into conversation. Such as: and so she said that I'd be walking down the street, she said, and then the light would turn red, she said... and so on and so on. It used to bother me to no end. Now I just giggle a bit.

My mom has a problem with finding the right words to use in front of things, like she'll say "a piece of coffee" or "a sip of sausage" lol She's always done that and it cracks me up every time... one thing that DOESN'T crack me up though is how she always calls me Sophia (my sister) or Ankie (my aunt). She does the reverse to them, so we never end up with the right name. I just refuse to acknowledge her until I get MY name lol

My Mom is so sweet and you'd never expect it but she has those moments.

Only makes her more funny.

That remind's me...

I was at a friend's house once watching "Dusk Til Dawn" in his open plan living room that walks into the kitchen. At the point in the film where they arrive at the 'titty twister bar' (when Cheeh Marin is "promoting" guests in), my pal's elderly aunt quietly came downstairs to get a drink from the kitchen and suddenly started screaming (in her broken English), "Waat is all this 'pussy, pussy, pussy!' that stooopid small man is saying!"

redface I was like, "How long has she been there eek "

I always think of her when that fim is now mentioned.

lol

Although it was majorly embarrassing for my buddy and I, his sweet, elderly aunty genuinely don't know what Cheech was referring to lol

She just got annoyed 'coz he kept repeating the word "Pussy!" and it wasn't making any sense to her.

The innocence mushy She's so lovely smile

I can picture her looking around the room going "Well there doesn't appear to be any cats on the telly..."

lol

Hard to find innocence like that any more.

I'm not sure. It's British though he's not.

British PM Robert Gascoyne-Cecil promoted his under-qualified nephew, Arthur Balfour, to Secretary of State for Ireland in 1886.

You can work out the rest from there. smile

(I've got a book on the origins of everyday phrases....)
