This might seem stupid...but get him some crazy insane amount of lego's...if he likes to build stuff. I regret the day I gave all my lego's away. just a suggestion. [Edited 5/20/05 10:40am] that's SO perfect... he loved them too and i heard him telling his girlfriend the other day how much he wished he had not given them away thanx

im guessing a car is a bit more than you wanted to hear... how about coupons for nights to use the family car the book idea sounds nice or, how about a night at a nice hotel with his friends you know, swimming, pizza, movies, that type thing ??? of course you will be in the next room but hey, they're "kinda" on their own for the night to me, the 16th birthday is a chance to show you really enjoy the person they're growing into and that you trust their judgement. so, anything that shows hes movin up in your eyes and in the world would make an impact i think. im sure whatever you do, it will be lovely good ideas thanx you are right about wanting to show him ( in ways ) that he is maturing and has good judgement

Maybe combine some presents, like the legos..to remember his childhood and never forget how to keep a child-like sense about himself..
Something else that would reflect what he wants in the future, and an engraved pocketwatch, to remember that time is what he makes it, time is a gift from God, one that should be spent on being good to others, and oneself, no matter what age..... It would be the first thing he could pass on to his children.... * damn, my stepson turns 16 in a coupla years, might use this myself!!! (I love pocket watches.....I think they rock!)

When I was at a loss back in December about what to get my ex/current boyfriend for his birthday, I ended up making ticketmaster my best friend. Perhaps tickets to a concert of some people he enjoys listening to? It took awhile for me to figure out a band to take N. to see, but I ended up, luckily, finding Over the Rhine was playing an hour away at the Taft Theatre in Cincinnati. You could rummage through his cd collection and search. Also, since he digs soccer, do you have any MLS teams around? If I'm not mistaken, this is Major League Soccer season. I am, potentially, going to take N.'s children to see a game next month. Just a thought. Insatiable taught me everything I know about balls.
