Anyone watch Six Feet Under?
I think its done a fabulous job portraying gay characters as real life average americans, all the while depicting a fairly accurate representation of "gay culture" without resorting to gay sterotypes.
A drop in the bucket, to be sure, but one piece of media worth mentioning.

It does matter when we "gay" people are treated like shit all the time in public, media what have you. And there are supposedly no gay do-gooders in this world.

What!

Do you not recognize all the achievements gays have made thoughout the years? There will always be more obstacles in the way! There will ALWAYS be negativeity towards gays , but recognize and be thankful that you are gay in 2005 and not 1955! Good fucking grief! Gays, just like minorities have come a LONG way! recognize the positive NOT the negative!!!

Gays bitching about what they have not achieved is just like blacks bitching about slavery!

One problem, politically, for having stars being the vocal advocates is that the assholes on the right can continue painting gay=hollywood elite. That bullshit flies so well with their constituency. It makes the issue seem trivial, as if all of us are Hollywood elitists and not just average Americans like everyone else. I wish we had more role models in the community. It would help the young generation so much.

There was definitely more during the whole ACT UP and Queer Nation Era. WHen regualr folks were speaking out cuz NO ONE was. I saw a few role models in my day.

Interesting you bring up the issue of the black vs gay thing....seems to come up all the time.

But I do think there is a difference. Slavery for most intents and purposes is over. Blacks have "gotten" all of the rights everyone else has. Gay's have not.

You are correct we have acheived so much. We have a lot to be thankful for. We still have a long way to go.

Girl, what the HELL are you talking about? Like what kind of achievements? Over coming those obstacles at ALL is what being a gay role model is all about. Attempting to make things easier for us one step at a time. And frankly, i'd be happy to be gay in ANY TIME. And gays are minorities. I don't even know what i'm saying, but where are you coming from? For real. You're not gay, you don't understand the struggle.

They were the first and largest personal supporters of AIDS awarness in the early days.

Madonna was the first celebrity to appear on the Advocate.

Liz Taylor was the first celebrity to even say the name AIDS publically.

Theses two women were there for us in the hardest of times and you don't list them? bad bad bad bad

What are gay role models anyway?

there are soo many niches within the gay community could one person even stand out and say hey i'm a gay role model?

Elton, Boy George, George Michael, Greg Luganis, Andy Bell, Neil Tennant, and the litany of disigners are defently the front runners. But i know many a gay man who can't identify with any of them.

We have to define what we want before we can set an ideal of what we want to be like.

Attacking the idea of gay "role models" is some ignorant shit.

All minorities have to face incredible stereoptyping and all sorts of damaging biases.

I remember when I was growing up, the only portrayal of asians in the movies where Long Duck Dong from 16 candles, and that sexually neutered east Idian guy from Short Circuit. It was amazing the kinds of harrassment that I would get both from whites and blacks becuase of it.

Today, asian role models (minus that dumb ass William Hung bitch) are actually ones I can be proud of for the most part. We've come a long way.

I applaud gay role models and wish there were more. My concern is that they're about where Asians where back in the 1980's. Like Ellen and Queer Eye, they're forced to be sexually neutered comical characters instead of the fully multi-demensional people that they are.

Role Models are necessary for all people, but for oppressed people or for misunderstood minorities, they are all the more important.

That is why I am ashamed that I embarrass asians so much. disbelief

God I wish LEIGH BOWERY were still alive. And oh how I wish Joey Arias could come sing for me!!!

Did anyone see Terry Sweeney on SNL when Madonna was on back in the day. I still have it on tape. I thought it was hilarious.
