There is so much ignorance on this thread: One more shallow ass thing to hate on. For my 36th birthday, I'm dumping perms and getting my head shaved and growing my hair naturally for braids or locs, or maybe twists.

I think what most people see as ugly are the "Dread"Locks which have no manicured look, but have the simple unkept look. Dreadlocks are of rastafarian culture and are not manicured or cared for in the more recognized forms we are seeing more and more of today. Those locks are allowed to do whatever it is they do in forming the matted look that true Rastas wear. My locks, I twist ever few months or so and keep them separated in the interim so they don't grow into each other and get that wild matted look, and to each their own in that regard.
i agree...

i asked my mom this question but she gets so mad whenever i talk about locksing up that she stops speaking 2 me so i never had it answered, but i'd love 2 hear your opinion: do u think that locks are frowned so badly upon that it jepordizes my opportunity 2 get a decent job? (i wanna be a teacher)

Honestly I think it depends on where you live. In the Bay Area no one would look @ you twice for having locs when applying for jobs... hell, they might even find you more appealing lol There's that assumption that loc wearers are more on the spiritual tip, more healthy, more evolved - I'm not saying any of it is true or untrue but I find that people make those assumptions.

However if you live somewhere that's whack you might have some issues comfort

You muthafuckas kill me. Locs are beautiful nana

Just wanna point out, all those pics you posted are of famous ppl who have someone else look after their hair..

What about pics of ordinary dreads like these?

For your info I do my own hair & it looks sorta like Cassandra Wilson's neutral

Probably better actually lol redface

I ain't rich & I ain't famous - who the fuck elses pictures can I post but pics I can find??? lol hmm

And the locs you've posted aren't necessarily "ordinary" - they're free form. I have salon locs, they're very manicured. So do most loc wearers that I see these days. neutral neutral

I thought all the photos above--celebrity or not--are of real people with real hair.

Like any other hairstyle there's the choice to either let your hair grow as is or to intervene with some level of upkeep to maintain a desired look and basic hygiene.

I'm not one to bash the permed chicks. Do u but I hate it when they bash the happy to be nappy folks. I've LEARNED that my hair isn't "bad" or hard to manage. We continue to have to relearn that being nappy headed, dark skinned, etc can be a part of the continuum of what is considered beauty.

I think the pics Redfeathers posted are a direct reflection of that assumption - that locs (besides those on the heads of celebrities) are or seem unkept & dirty - hell, some people still identify them w/ being crazy or homeless confused We need to change that notion folks - let's expand already smile

You just need to get your dreds done every once an awhile instead of letting it grow out of control. My uncles dreds are ridiculous; he's like over 6 ft and has dreds way past his waist.

Well, with me i never felt "black enough", even though i am ALL black. It's a shame because in the media, you see the tall, dark skinned, bald, black man being worshipped like some kind of God. And i don't even look like that. I'm the medium toned brotha with curly hair, so i never really felt "black and beautiful". So now i need dreads too? Great.....

Naw brotha...it is not a stamp or confirmation on your blackness or heritage or cultural background. It is a hairstyle one that has been around since the beginning of time, but don't allow a simple hairstyle to ever define who you are my man.

peace

And as far as maintenance goes...I twist them myself...about every three months or maybe longer...all you have to do once they have matted is keep them separated so they won't grow into each other unless that is the look you are looking for.

In a perfect world, it would be great if we could get to a point and accept that not everybody is going to fit a cookie cutter image or ideal based on ethnic identity or mainstream acceptance. Just as we vary in skin tone, shape, thoughts, beliefs, and experiences, the hair or lack thereof is varied. What one person may find beautiful, may not be remotely attractive to somebody else. In the end, that is ok as long as you are happy with what you've got. If not, then change it to fit you. Although there is the other side when you have to sacrifice what you like or want for whatever reason, but ultimately you have to live with yourself. You can't please everybody.
