How long does beer stay fresh? I was just going to open a bottle of my favourite beer (Kirin Ichiban) and noticed that the production date was Oct 26 2004. To the best of my knowledge, beer doesn't stay fresh for more than a couple of months, right? I recently bought this bottle, so does that mean they're trying to screw me over?
And by the way, what is your favourite beer? Please describe the taste because I'd love to try something new and would like to hear about it.

I thought that the "born-on date" was all a marketing ploy.

I do not really drink beer, but I understand that when beer gets old it can get 'skunky'

Exactly. But I have a feeling he chooses quantity over quality anyway. "1987? Sure, whatever."

I know (altho...I have a hunch the stuff is never around long enough at his place for it to get skunky so he might not know either)

My only statement on this subject is that only a complete wuss would ever have to mworry about the use by date on beer. All beer should be drunk within 48 hours of purchase. period!!! When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

I did open it within 48 hours actually. (am I sinking to bkw's level? ) It just so happened that it was almost seven months old when I bought it.

It depends on the type of beer, color bottle, and how it was taken care of at the store.Clear bottles left out in the light go bad pretty fast.
I try not to drink American beer, Canada has some good ones,I usually drink Labatts but Sleeman's Brewery in Guelph, Ontario has excellent beer. Once in a while a nice Black and Tan with Guinness and Harp Ale really is good. "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind"-Dr Seuss
