I once wrote a few texts for the Handicap Institute in Stockholm who had just renamed themselves the Aid Institute (Hjälpmedelsinstitutet) and they told me that it was no longer okay to call their clients "impaired" (rörelsehindrade) and instead wanted me to say "person with impairment" (person med rörelsehinder). It sounded quite awkward to me, especially when used in casual speech. And what did they think? That I didn't know it was a person with an impairment? Doesn't that go without saying?

I guess my point is that we shouldn't be so damn touchy about words. It's usually quite clear when there are bad intentions behind use of a certain word and when there isn't. I mean, when I ask if the girl is a mix after having said just before that my aunt looks just like her, then what's the problem? Not that khlk got upset or anything, but still, there was an indignant reaction there.

Oh well, I better brush up on my PC vocabulary. But everybody else can call me white even though I'm actually mauve/beige/orange or something.

Personally, I have no problem with ppl asking me my kids ethnic background, she knows half her family is black and the other half is white and she's ok with that!

Anyway, I'm glad you didn't take offense and that your daughter is okay with it too. My aunt has never had any problems with racism or stuff like that either (she's actually gotten a lot of appreciation for her skin color). The only thing she's suffered from is that her dad - who is from Jamaica - was absent during most of her life. She actually found him just a couple of years ago - in Germany of all places.
