How we sniff out our lovers.....

How We Sniff Out Our Lovers

While looks still count, it turns out that our sense of smell may be one of the most important tools we use when choosing a suitable sexual partner. It's pretty simple, actually: We use choose someone whose natural body scent smells good to us.

Researchers from Philadelphia's Monell Chemical Senses Center showed that human beings use natural body scent to help determine whether someone is attractive or not. Our natural scent, also called pheromones, doesn't always register on a conscious level, but it's long been thought pheromones have a big impact on our behavior, reports the BBC News.

The study: A group of 82 men and woman, some of whom were straight and some of whom were gay or lesbian, were asked to sniff underarm sweat collected from 24 donors of different gender and sexual orientation. Brain scans were used to determine which areas of the brain were stimulated by the scents.

The results: Interestingly, the gay men were particularly good at detecting the scent of other gay men. Gays and lesbians were found to prefer strikingly different body odor than did heterosexual men and women.

* Gay men preferred the odor of other gay men and heterosexual women.
* Heterosexual men and women, as well as lesbians, least preferred the odor of gay men.

Overall, odor preference was based more on the perceptions of pleasantness or unpleasantness and not to odor intensity, which suggests that some of the chemical attributes that contribute to human body odors are related to an individual's gender and sexual orientation.

"Our findings support the contention that gender preference has a biological component that is reflected in both the production of different body odors and in the perception of and response to body odors," lead researcher Dr. Charles Wysocki said in a news release announcing the study findings.

The research has been published in the journal Psychological Science.

What if you see a fancy piece but they stink of shit? You see Philadelphia's Monell Chemical Senses Center can research all they like but ultimately their research is flawed.
