In the Celtic zodiac, Rowan is the sign for people born between the 1st and 10th April or 4th and 13th October and stands for sensitivity and sense of justice. The tree is also dedicated to the God Thor who is said to have rescued himself from a rushing river by grasping hold of the branch of a Rowan tree. This is why the tree is also called Thorsbjork (Thor's rescue). The river corresponds to the flow of blood which is staunched by the juice of the Rowan, the red berries correspond to fire and lightening, the pinnate leaves to the clouds. The berries protect the house from lightening, the tree wards off evil spirits, the crown tips are said to be used as a cabbage dish by witches in midwinter. Prehistoric findings testify to the age of the Rowan tree. Remains of a Rowan branch, which was probably believed to have protective powers against enchantment, were found in a Bronze age grave, sealed in a bronze vessel together with various types of animal bones. Later, the belief in the protective powers of the Rowan lived on. On the eve of Walpurgis Night Rowan branches were placed over the doors of the stables to ward off evil spirits. In southern Bohemia berry-bearing branches were placed over the windows and on the roofs to protect the houses against lightening. But Rowan also continued to play a role in sagas and folklore as a symbol of growth, strength and robustness up to the last century. | |
