My favorites are...
Mullholland Dr. Fire Walk with Me Elephant Man Twin Peaks the Series...of Course I think the reason I like these is because they are linear for the most part...and make some sort of sense. I didn't care for Lost Highway too much (way way way too long) and Dune is pretty and all but they were just messy excercises in self indulgence. it's funny - right after i saw 'lost highway' and 'mulholland dr.' the first time, i was violently angry about both movies and thought they were obtuse, masturbatory crap. then, after a few days, i'd realize i couldn't stop thinking about them, then i'd see the movies again and the mysteries of the stories would present themselves to me. david lynch is a freakin' brilliant filmmaker. you can't watch his movies just once and do any justice to the experience.
the only film of his i'm still not crazy about is dune, and i think that was a compromised project for him. they wanted it to look like a david lynch film but it didn't seem like they wanted it to BE a david lynch film. if that makes sense. | |
