Things you thought you'd never see happen in your lifetime

With the announcement of the new Rolling Stones tour and confirmation that they will once again rehearse in Toronto (I think this is the fourth time?), it got me thinking about things you thought you'd never see happen in your lifetime.

When I was a kid, The Rolling Stones were outlaws in this town. Not only had the Prime Minister's wife "run away" with them, but Keith Richards was busted for heroin possession here (he had so much with him that I believe they also charged him with intent to traffic!). For many years, I don't even think Richards was allowed back in the country.

Now, not only do the Stones rehearse here (living here for several months at a time and raving about our town), but they received the key to the city a couple years back for staging a special concert here to spread awareness that the SARS scare was over.

Quite a turnabout, I would say.

What things have happened during your lifetime that you thought you'd never see?

You can thank Springsteen for busting Fenway's concert cherry. 'Til he played there in '03, they hadn't had a rock show there in a long, long time. The Boss' org. convinced them all would go well and it did (two night's worth). In fact, you can also thank Bruce for lifting The Curse of the Bambino (he did so on Night One, I believe). wink

I'm not thanking Bruce for shit cuz there's no way in hell I'll be able to get a ticket for this! Or even if I could I couldn't afford it! Now had Bruce convinced them to do a FREE concert then I'd thank him!

Well, depending on how many nights they play, it might be a buyer's market. If you can't get anything in advance, it might be worthwhile trying out front just before or just after showtime. Scalpers might be unloadin' 'em.

Scalpers on Yawkey Way will sell the tickets for a lot more. You can't even get tickets to a game under 60 bucks...it's ridiculous. I only go if it's free now, cuz you still end up spending at least 100 bucks on booze food and parking.

I forgot to mention that the Stones' rehearsal space is right around the corner from Prince's house (it's literally a 30-second drive). Can anyone say "Jam on 'Miss You'"? headbang

Seeing MJ in pajamas with nappy hair and being held up by his daddy and a bodygaurd, one on each arm, with a death grimmace on his face while gingerly walking in late for his child molestation trial and the trial being televised on Court tv five days a week.

Prince stealing a guitar solo during an all star performance of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" at the induction R&R Hall of fame award ceremony , and totally disrespcting the other artists by acting as if he was the baddest mutha sucka on the stage and then tossing the used guitar (with stings probably broken and unrepairable) and then walking off the stage as if he was the baddest rock and roll artist that ever accepted an award in the history of rock and roll and awards ceremonies!

disbelief

The fall of the Soviet Union. When we were kids, remember how scary the Soviet Union was? A superpower with political and philisophical beliefs opposite of ours, an enemy with enough nuclear weapons to blow this country up 100 times over. Then one day, the threat was gone.....only to be replaced with a new one sigh

Hopefully there will come a day in our lifetime when we can look back and say "remember when we used to be afraid of terrorism", and say that because it's no longer a reality.
