Because she hadn't quite "found herself" yet. There were certain issues that she had been struggling with for a long, long time and apparently she couldn't deal with them if I was around. I believed her when she said this even though it sounds like a classic "it's not you, it's me"-type speech, mostly because I had seen these things in her already. Besides, I think we were just too different in a few important areas. I wanted to see the world, she wanted to stay home. I sometimes got into conflicts for poor reasons, she was afraid of conflicts, I was more of an extrovert, she was more of an introvert etc.
