The remains of a young Black female were found on Saturday, April 28, 2001 in a wooded area of Kansas City, MO near 59th and Kensington. It was determined that she had been murdered and she may have been deceased anywhere from one to five days prior to her discovery. She has a crescent moon shaped birthmark on her left shoulder. It couldn't be determined if a chip in her left front tooth is recent or had been present for a longer term. The estimated year of birth is between 1994 and 1996. This photograph is a computer-aided facial reconstruction created at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The "Missing" field is the date when she was found, the "Missing From" field is the location she was found and the "DOB," "Age Now," "Height" and "Weight" fields are approximations.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For four years, she was known only as Precious Doe, a little girl whose headless body was found along a road. On Thursday, police identified the girl, arrested her mother on murder charges and pronounced the sad mystery solved.



The girl with big brown eyes and neat cornrows in her hair was identified as Erica Michelle Marie Green, just shy of 4 when she was found.

Her mother, Michelle M. Johnson, 30, was charged with murder and endangering the welfare of a child. Police said she told them her husband, Erica's stepfather, killed the girl with a kick to the head and used hedge clippers to sever her head.

Johnson and her husband, who was not identified, were being held in Oklahoma, where they live. No immediate charges were brought against the husband.

"We have closure," Police Chief James Corwin said. "The little girl that we've known for four years as Precious Doe has a name."

Police said a tip enabled them to identify Erica, but they would not elaborate. And they gave no motive for the little girl's slaying.

The girl's body was found near an intersection on April 28, 2001. Days later, her head was found nearby, wrapped in a trash bag.

In the months after she became known as Precious Doe, hundreds attended candlelight vigils, volunteered to answer witness hot lines and passed out fliers with an artist's rendering of the girl. The FBI took blood samples from family members of missing black girls, and the case was featured on television's "America's Most Wanted."

A makeshift memorial of poems, teddy bears and flowers was eventually replaced by a permanent memorial in a park near where her body was found. On Thursday morning, among flowers and balloons, a handwritten sign announced the news: "My Name Is Erica Michelle Maria Green."

Authorities said the little girl was killed in Kansas City, where the family had been staying with a friend. According to court papers, Johnson said her husband kicked Erica in the head, and they left her on the floor for two days. They did not seek medical help, she said, because both had warrants out for their arrest.

The child died, and the couple carried the body to a church parking lot, then through the woods, where the stepfather cut the girl's head with hedge clippers, police said.

The break in the case apparently came after community activist Alonzo Washington, who has long championed efforts to find out who the little girl was, placed another advertisement seeking leads in a local paper.

"There's something about it that just bothers me that a child could be thrown away and people forget about it," said Washington, who has worked to raise awareness of missing black children.

Washington said a grandfather of one of the individuals involved in the case came forward, talking with him and detectives last weekend. He said the source, who had spoken to police before on the case, sent photographs of the child as well as hair samples from the child and the mother.

Police and prosecutors refused to confirm specifics or identify the source. Washington declined to be more specific.

A photo displayed by police during a news conference, showing the girl with a slight smile and adornments in her braided hair, may have been a picture of the wrong child. Oklahoma police saw the picture and said it appeared to be one of the girl's cousins.

Johnson was being held on $500,000 bail in her hometown of Muskogee, Okla., and will be brought to Kansas City as soon as possible, prosecutor Michael Sanders said.

Oklahoma records show Michelle Johnson has convictions for theft and forgery. The stepfather has convictions for several offenses, including assault with a dangerous weapon and possessing a sawed-off shotgun.

In Kansas City, police closed off the street in front of the run-down home where authorities said Johnson and her husband had been staying at the time of the killing.

People who long had been transfixed by the case welcomed news of the arrests.

Billy Stegall, a retired post office worker and Army sergeant, discovered Erica's head in 2001 and has gone back to the site regularly to pray.

"This is a day I have been looking for," he said. "I just asked the Lord to say who she is so she could be at peace, because she wasn't at peace and I wasn't at peace."



everyone, everywhere you go has something to say about this case there are few words that come to mind to discribe how a mother could do this to their own child... yet, for the most part, folks are very happy that SOMEONE is finally paying for this poor babies death

do any of you remember hearing of this in the news in your area ??? i thought for sure someone would have put this up by now ?? they told us here that they were asking all over the country, but, then again, maybe thats not true.



and, HOW THE HELL can you have a child, then not have it anymore ??? they say they were staying with 'friends' ??? well, didnt the 'friends' wonder when the baby went missing ???? especially after everyone was looking all over for the baby ??? why didnt they call into police then ???

ooohhhh My baby is 3, Stories like this makes me wanna just hug her and hold her to me all day, Sad world when kids aren't even safe with their own parents. I hadn't heard the story, I've stop watching the news due to all the bad things going on. With all the amber alerts and then they're found dead. Kids bring guns to school and shoot up other kids. Remember the couple that threw the newborn out of the car onto the side of the road and drove off. I think that happened twice. It's just all sooo sad.

This is very sad. I'm so glad they found her killers. I heard that part of the reason they didn't seek medical attention for Precious is because they both had arrest warrents out on them, so they just cut her head off and dumped her . This doesn't suprise me in the least. I think both of them should be sterilized and tossed in jail for the rest of their miserable lives.

it was horrible to hear of the baby being found like she was... but now, somehow, since we see her actual face, and know how she died, and why.. and SEE the people who did this to her..... it almost makes this harder to deal with than when it first happened

thank god the other children will have an opportunity to have a better life, surely those 'parents' werent good to any of them, i mean, how could they be ??? my prayers for them are that they get to stay together, love each other, and try to move past this horrible event in any way they can

The little girl's father was in prison also, and the mother told him that Erica was staying with relatives in Chicago.....

She got scared alittle, but calmed when I told her everthing will be ok, we're just being safe. She hasn't asked to go out by herself anymore, she'll say "wanna go outside with me and play". I had been following this case. I saw something regarding the case and how they got someone to do a bust of her head from her skull. People used to meet every Sunday at the park where she was found so that nobody would forget.

That little girl went straight to heaven as soon as she was killed. In all honesty I can't type anymore....
