marooned sleigh I have to make vocabulary exercises out of a literary fragment and I'm wondering about this... In the sentence:
"Out in the country it was not uncommon to discover that she had slipped away, alone, out to the lake, maybe, or down to the cellar, where once I found her sitting in the big marooned sleigh, reading, her fur coat thrown over her knees." Does 'marooned' mean 'dark reddish-purple' or 'abandoned'? English is a difficult language

maroon is a dark reddish-purple Yes, that's what the dictionary tells me. But the colour-reference seems a bit more logical to me... This colour can in no way be referred to by using maroonED?

my dictionary says not | |

Looking at the entire sentence abandoned seems to make more sense if you take in consideration what the mood they're trying to set is (lonely, empty, cold etc etc).

You have a Dutch dictionary at your place? Or did I simply never realize you were Dutch?

btw I have to make exercises within the English language itself, so I can not refer to Dutch dictionaries...
It's from 'The secret history', for those who are wondering...

There have been many movies, and some TV shows, about people marooned on either desert islands or in space. (sorry, Googled, but I'm lazy like that )

For almost two full months, I was marooned in nowhere-land while various people tried to get their shit together.
