involved in a hit and run Yesterday morning (Sunday, May 1st) around 1 am I was involved in a hit and run. My sister and I were walking down a somewhat isolated road home from a friend's house. She was walking on the inside, closer to the road than I was.
The vehicle that hit her came from behind us and was big, dark, and probably speeding. We didn't hear it coming, and it didn't have headlights on. Katie was thrown 10 feet or so, and rolled. They didn't stop or even slow down afterwards. I wasn't hit by the vehicle, but I was hit by Katie's body as she was hit. I wasn't hurt, it just knocked off my glasses and gave me a headache which hasn't gone away yet. Katie didn't do quite as well. She's still in the hospital now. She's got a black eye, some loose teeth, road rash on her face and upper torso, and bruising and cuts all over. Her entire left side, where she was struck by the vehicle, is sore and the bones are bruised, so she's having a hard time moving much. The bones around her right eye socket are broken, so tomorrow she'll be in surgery having bits of plastic and metal attached to the bones so her eye socket doesn't collapse. Luckily, there doesn't appear to be any internal bleeding or damage, or brain or spinal cord injury. It could've been a lot worse than it was. The paramedics and police who were at the scene said that judging from the tire tracks, it looked like the driver had swerved on purpose to hit us. All day today I've kept seeing her hit, over and over, and hearing the sound it made. I haven't been able to think of anything else. I know she'll be okay, but I can't help think of what might have happened, had she been hit more directly or had the car been going faster than it was. She's my sister. I don't know what I'd do if anything happened to her. Here's a link for a blurb from a local news website about it, if anyone's interested: it's been removed from the page now/ [Edited 5/2/05 16:48pm] "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I'm sorry to hear that, although it's a blessing that her injuries were not worse and that you were not hit. I hope she makes a full recovery and that you're feeling better soon.

I remember when I was around 10 years old I was walking down the street with my friend and a car came screeching around the corner too fast and was coming directly towards us. We were on the opposite side of the road and the car was going so fast it obviously wasn't going to make the turn. Luckily it hit the curb at just enough of an angle to bounce off and go back across the street into a lamp post. Turns out that the driver was drunk. It was such a shock because the car must've been just a few degrees away from mounting the curb and hitting us both.

Wow, that must have been awful. Those hit and run stories make me mad like hell. Last week a girl was killed by a car in the city I was working in. It took several days for the police to find the man who did it. It turned out he had been drinking in a pub with his son, getting home drunk, hitting the girl and just driving on... She was found by her teacher who was somewhere behind her and died on the street.
Anyway, it sounds like your sister is being a strong lady. I hope she recovers soon. Lots of strength to both of you!

How is your sister doing? She's going to be okay. She's had her surgery today, and if I didn't have to leave for work in a few minutes I'd go and see her. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I hope whoever did this drives off a f*cking cliff and it rolls for 300 feet after hiting the bottom and then their car explodes which sends their sorry ass in 100 different directions.
I'm glad you're okay, Erin, and I hope your sister can fully recover from this.

So she had her surgery yesterday around 2 pm. The doctor's had initially thought the bones around her eye were just fractured, but it turns out they were shattered! It didn't show up on the x-ray because the pieces of bone were still really close together. They said the pieces looked like corn flakes!
They had to remove what was left of the bone and replace it with a plastic bridge, held in place with screws. Her eye might be out of place once she's healed, so if it is they'll have to do more surgery to repair it. She'll be okay though, she's in stable condition and is conscious. If all goes well, she'll be home in a few days. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

How awful that that stupid driver had to swerve and hit your sister on purpose! Even more awful is that they didn't even stop, but kept right on going! I don't understand how someone can hit another person and not be concerned enough to stop to be sure that the person that they hit is not seriously injured. I hope your sister recovers quickly. typo edit [Edited 5/3/05 17:56pm] RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I know what you mean about the noise...and I can imagine it...Our neighbor lived across the street and one night we heard this noise that sounded like a truck tire bursting..My father looked out the window and saw her body in the middle of the road we were horrified and he ran down to see if she was ok. She was crosssing the street with her three children and luckily they had made it to the other side. They ran to get their aunt who lived in our apartment building (shes also a nurse) My father almost got hit by a car too because he was in the middle of the street trying to see if she was ok. Unfortunately she died right there. It was horrible and the noise I can still remember it clearly and it makes me cringe. I'm really glad you didnt have to go through a horrible experience and you guys are okay. Both of you will be in my prayers.

My sister came home from the hospital Wednesday evening. She's doing alright. She's got a wheelchair for now for when she goes out, and a walker to use inside the house.
I took her out to the mall this evening to help her find some shoes to wear to her grad ceremonies, and so many people staring at her and the messed up side of her face. It was so rude! She saw the plastic surgeon again today to have her stitches taken out, and check on how her eye is healing. It's pretty likely that she'll have to get a second surgery, because her new plastic cheekbone is noticably more prominent than her natural one, and makes here eye sit a little higher than it should.
