i had one of those nights where you kick yourself for not taking a particular course of action

in my case it was a young streetworker who had been hurt. `i helped her clean up and got her sent home - but i wish i had thought to call the streetworker advocacy number.

i still think about her and wonder if she's ok. we can only do what we can do and leave the rest up to fate. just think if you had not stopped she might have tried again

i'm glad you heard from her hun - hug

"And I questioned all my motivations. Why am I writing what I'm writing? Why am I saying what I'm saying? Do I mean it? Am I bullshitting? Am I just trying to be the most popular guy in town? Do I need to be liked that much? I questioned everything I'd ever done, and it was good. You should do that. And then you realize there is no single motivation to anything. You're doing it for all of those reasons." - Bruce Springsteen

There's nothing more that I could add, that hasn't already been said, so I'll just give you a giant hug instead.

I was not too far from home when a young woman ran out in front of a speeding car in front of me. Luckily, the driver was able to stop before hitting her. At that point, the woman just stood there in front of the car for what seemed like an eternity before stumbling, dazed, across the road. The car drove away, while the woman collapsed against a fence, sobbing.

No one stopped.

I pulled over to the side of the road and put my hazards on. I got out and went over to the young woman. I asked her if she was okay. She said, “I don’t want to be here anymore…I can’t take anymore…”. I asked her what had happened, but she said she didn’t want to talk about it. She continued to cry. I asked her if she had any family in the city and she said she was from Nova Scotia, but that her sister was in the city. After trying to comfort her for a while, I got out my cell phone and got a therapist’s number for her. I made her promise to call the doctor and her sister. She seemed to have calmed down a little. I drove her to a payphone and gave her a couple of quarters. I gave her my number and told her that I was expecting her to call me today, so that I would know she was alright.

In hindsight, I should have driven her to a hospital, but I did not think of that at the time. I am kicking myself for not doing that.

I heard from her last night! She sounded a lot better and she's made an appointment with the therapist! biggrin

hug clapping woot! clapping woot! Kudos to you for helping out that distressed young woman. We need more people in the world like you who are not afraid to reach out and help strangers. Too many people turn their back on someone they see who is in trouble because they can't be bothered. disbelief
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Not on the same level, but the same issue:

There was an old man with Parkinson's disease trying to cross the street by himself (I later learned he was AWOL from the nursing home, heh). He kept falling and falling and pickign himself up. The light turned green, and everyone just started driving or going around him. I just couldn't believe it!

I pulled my car over and helped him get across the street safely and into the grocery store. His knees were bloody, even though he had kneepads on. sad

That moment still haunts me, and I still think of what I should've/could've done.

sigh

omg That poor man! hug

There's a difference between someone with a terminal illness wanting to commit suicide to avoid suffering, and someone who has a bad week and breaks up with their significant other or something like that, and makes a hasty decision to end their life over something petty and temporary.

I saw a girl get whacked by a van a couple years ago. It's interesting you mentioned this girl tried to commit suicide this way, I didn't think anyone would go for something as painful and crazy as that.

I was driving down a busy 5 lane street and out of the corner of my eye saw this girl make a mad dash across the street. I couldn't figure out why the hell she was doing that, and I watched the panicked look on her face as she ran. Then, and I'm not saying this to be funny, a van nailed her, and it was so unreal it looked like something from a cartoon, She got tossed in the air. By the time I was able to slow down and stop, I heard her hit the ground and start screaming. I did not want to turn around and look back at all because the sounds alone were nauseating.

Alot of people stopped and ran over to her. She had this posessed look in her eyes, probabbly from the shock of it all, and noticably broke several bones in her leg and arm.

They took a report from me and several other people, but the whole thing was just really weird.
