PHOTOSHOP DISCUSSION OK, there's no photoshop forum here, but a lot of photoshop masters masters.
I'm sure you all have some questions, tips and rants. I'll start. (Rant) When are they finally going to add a preview for fonts? It drives me crazy to go font by font until I find something I like. (Question) When I try the overlay, it also picks up the color, not just shading. For example, if I design a can, and the color of the can is Yellow, and I also designed a logo. Now I want to put the logo layer in overlay mode, to pick up the same shading the can has, but it also changes the color of the logo to Yellow. Any tips on how to avoid that problem?

Tip for the fonts: Buy a font book! Just kiddin'! I printed them out!Typed the word Arial and used the font for it! The word Times ...font Times.. For your other problem, I don't know excactly what you mean..my version is in Dutch , but I think You have to create a path for each Item and create a different layer for each item. Select the Item and give it color. The Borg... Partypoopers of the galaxy.. ( Medical Hologram )

Yes, but only when you choose a different font, you can see what it looks like. there's no preview on the font list, so you have to choose each font for you to see it.

I know I keep pitching this program but...
http://www.gimp.org It's free, and for what MOST people use photoshop for, it's very capable.

The newest version of Photoshop (CS2) does have a font preview. The other way to flip through fonts quickly in Photoshop (all versions) is to highlight your text, then select the font menu, then just press your up and down arrow keys. Your text will switch through the fonts quickly.
For the Overlay issue, thats just the way the overlay blending mode works. Try this; make the yellow area of the can a solid yellow. Then make a new layer over top of that with the logo. Then go back to the yellow layer and choose Load Selection. Make a third layer on top of everything, and fill it with a black and white gradient that mimicks the shape of the can. Set this layers Blending Mode to either Multiply, Soft Light, or Darken (whichever looks best).
