The first half of that sentence causes the second half. Why do you think the vast majority of the planet thinks nothing about seeing a woman breast feeding.

The way you view the breast causes the way you view breastfeeding.

You cannot disassociate the sexual aspect of the breast from the intended purpose of the breast.

Otherwise you would think nothing of seeing a woman breast feeding. What else could cause your reaction, hating to see a child with a healthy diet? I doubt it.

That point was brought up by another poster, and I responded that I was raised in a strict household where I would probably get my ass whooped if I showed any "private part" of my body. Perhaps that's why I have such an aversion to breastfeeding, but like I also stated earlier, if I were to ever have a child, that could change. After you give birth to a baby, I don't think that any part of your body is so "private" anymore. smile

why do you keep saying such silly things and then smiling like it makes it all ok after that ????? smile

but, why does it have to be 'anything' in your face ????

cant it just be the same as seeing a baby drinking a bottle ??? you look over, and oh, thats nice, the baby is eating too mushy

Because it's not the same, at least not to me. We can go on and on and on about this...it's just MY opinion. Like I said, I don't find it repulsive or anything it's the natural way. But taking a shit is natural too and I'm not about to squat in the middle of a restaraunt and dump.

A lot of you are going to hate me for that!

Just use a damn pump!

ok, ok, i see your point..

must answer... firstly, some children wont drink from a bottle when they are nursing, they want only the breast, so in that situation, that child wouldnt be happy until he/she recieved the breast.

second, yes, taking a dump IS totally natural lol ya know whats great about babies ??? they get to take a dump anywhere they want yay!

If babies have to modify their eating habits so as not to upset the sensitive then we all should.

From this point on no-one is to put food in their mouth in public. You all have to go find a private place to eat. After all there is nothing more filthy than the human mouth.

I wonder if someone who is offended by seeing a breast feeding mother in public is just as disgusted by seeing a smoker in public?

And if they are why hasn't anyone started a thread about how digusting and barbaric it is to see people smoking in public.

After all who would choose to put a cigarette in their mouth over a nipple. The nipple is disgusting but the cigarette is acceptable. That's just screwed up.

Personally, I couldn't breast feed my children because it didn't feel very natural for me. I thought about, I bought a pump, but I couldn't go through with it. I realize it's the natural thing to do, but it wasn't okay for me. I don't know if it was the closeness of the child to me, or what... but, I didn't even like the thought. Thank God for formula!

On the other hand, seeing women in public breast feeding their child doesn't turn my stomach or make me think it's gross or barbaric. It's just a mother feeding her child and I move on.

That's a bit extreme, don't you think? Once we get past a certain age, we don't suck milk from another human's breast, we have other sources of getting nourishment. I can see the point you're trying to make, but it doesn't make sense.

You're right, it is digusting seeing a person smoking in public, just the same way it's disgusting to see someone getting drunk and falling down in public. Not acceptable behavior at all.

I would much rather put a nipple in my mouth but if I did that in public I would be arrested.

Just use a pump! It's not modifying babies eating habits! You're still feeding the kid!

I know it's extreme I was using irony to make a point that it is the perception of the breast and not the feeding which causes the response.

I agree it is the perception of the breast that is part of the problem, that was discussed above. Check the GD forum, CarrieLee beat me to it and has created a "It is disgusting and barbaric to see people smoking in public" thread.

I'm sorry, but that is the very thing which created the problem in the first place. It's like ALT said: we've sexualized the breast so much that we've lost track of the original and intended purpose of them and made them into something both erotic and shameful.

That means, it's not sick to watch. It's just as bad as saying it's gross.

are you saying, IM creating a problem ???? or are you agreeing ???

I'm saying that the thought that it's sick to watch a other breast feed her baby stems from over-sexualizing breasts which is the same reason why some think it's something mothers shouldn't do in public.

I don't really think it's appropriate to breast feed in a public place where other people can see you. If I can be done in a private place, then that would probably be okay. smile

Why?? you eat in public places don't you?? why can't my child?? i breast fed my son pretty much out of necessity, he was born almost 7 weeks premature and needed the antibodies provided by my milk to fight off infection and to build up his immune system. not once out of the 9 months i nursed him did i EVER flash anyone. noone even knew i was feeding him. my father had come into a room when i was feeding him and had no idea until i had to change sides..he was embarresed not me. and he still didn't see anything. there is such a negative stigmatism associated with breast feeding that NEEDS to change. i was only doing what was necessary for the health of my child. if ya don't like it don't look. woman that just 'haul it out' have no class but don't ostrasize all women for doing what is good and natural.

are the people who think that mothers should go in a private place to breast feed mothers? i'm wondering 'cause i dunno if you'd feel the same way. breastfeeding is more convenient. me personally i breastfed all three of my sons. when in public
i always had pumped milk already ready in bottles but it never bothered me if a woman fed her child in front of me. its not barbaric, the breasts are there for milk for babies not for men to hang on them. when i didn't have bottles and my baby was hungry and i got all this stuff like a diaper bag, my stuff and all kind of crap that you gotta carry around when you have a baby, i'm not gonna get up and gather all my shit, dropping it along the way 'cause somebody else is uncomfortable. if my baby is hungry hes hungry. let the other person go somewhere private confused

This discussion reminds me of a "friends" episode, where Chandler and Joey are uncomfortable when Carol is breastfeeding Ben.

Ross: "It's the most beautiful thing in the world"
Joey: "I know, but there's a baby sucking on it"

falloff

Also found this clip of a woman doing a yoga excersise and breastfeeding at the same time, very funny.

Wow this stuck a cord with me for real. I breast fed all my children because it is best for baby period. It is not for everyone I agree, and took some skill too wink It reminded me of being a new breastfeeding mother in the mall one day. I didn't have anywhere else to feed my daughter and she was very hungry and crying. I found a quiet corner which I thought was appropriate and way out of the way of normal flow of traffic. I was mostly covered by a tree or plant and had a blanket over me and the baby. A security guard came up to me and told me I couldn't do that here....and I was pissed. I asked him where he would like me to do it, and he said, "how about the bathroom?" I said, "how would you like to eat your lunch in the toliet?" He threw me out. I left. I was soooo pissed. We are the ones with the issues, and we should let mothers be mothers where ever the need arises. Please also know that there are added benefits to the mother who breastfeeds such as faster weight loss after pregnancy, and it has been found to help prevent types of cancer for you and your child.

There definitely is a negative feeling associated with breast feeding no doubt about that. I think AnotherLoverToo hit the nail on the head when she said, "I realized we've sexualized the breast so much that we've lost track of the original and intended purpose of them and made them into something both erotic and shameful." She's right about that, and reading the responses on this thread has made me realize why I find breastfeeding gross. Like I stated earlier, I do avert my eyes when I see a woman breastfeeding her child, but the feelings are still there.

I think that is probably it. Once you have a child everything changes, especially your concern for yourself or anyone other than that little helpless human you have brought into this world.
