Schrader's Exorcist Prequel Gets a Release Date

Scott Weinberg writes: "Remember all the hoopla that surrounded last year's "Exorcist: The Beginning"? How the execs didn't like Paul Schrader's cut so they hired Renny Harlin to do the whole movie pretty much from scratch? And how the movie ended up, well, pretty bad, even after all that trouble? Well now we can see how "unreleasable" Schrader's original version actually is, because WB will be releasing it (in limited release) on May 20th.

No word yet on what this version will be called, but Variety says that WB is leaning towards "Dominion: A Prequel to the Exorcist." (Also no word on if WB is kidding about that title or not.)"

I was wondering about this version of the movie. From what I hear, it is much better than what was actually released last year.

Hopefully this will play someowher in the SF Bay area so I can check it out to compare the two movies.

So the version that was released recently on DVD is not what you are talking about here, but rather the version that wound up in the theaters? I almost rented it after hearing of this, but was worried it might be the crappy version.

How much different are the two? Same actors?

the version currently on DVD is the crap version...which i actually paid to see cause i couldnt believe a movie could be as aweful as the critics were declaring it. and it was.

Schrader's version is supposedly less b-movie horror and more intellectual horror which of course scared the studios away...

i cant wait..this has to be the first time in film history that moviegoers will get to judge a studio's decision.

The first prequel was so awful that I wanted to ask for my $ back. Lets hope this one is better.

I keep hoping that WB did the same thing about 15 years ago. The version of Graffiti Bridge that was released was the suck ass version and the real masterpiece is still in the can waiting to be released....well one can dream lol .

It should be very interesting to see the difference. I personally like the intellectual horror better.

Q. I noticed that you did not review the prequel, "The Exorcist: The Beginning" that came out last year. Do you have something against the movies that continue the story of the original "Exorcist"?

Dan Harris, Brookings, S.D.

A. It was not previewed for critics, and I never caught up with it. I have, however, just seen Paul Schrader's original "The Exorcist: The Prequel," which was shelved by the studio, reportedly because it was "too serious." Renny Harlin was hired to make a version that replaced three of the four leads, spent $50 million on top of Schrader's $30 million, and the movie scored only 11 percent on the Tomatometer.

The Schrader version is a very good film, strong and true. It is intelligent about spiritual matters, sensitive to the complexities of its characters, and does something risky and daring in this time of jaded horror movies: It takes evil seriously. It will have a limited theatrical run next month before a DVD release.
