Moderator | one of the neighbors of the studio where I work at night does body retreival. He is sub-contracted by the city and usually called upon for the really bad cases.
One night, he invited me with him. He literally works around the clock and takes "cat naps" here and there as he's always on call. You'd be amazed how many people die in your own city per day that you never even hear about on the news or papers. He says he averages 40 - 60 bodies per week. I thought I could handle seeing what I saw, but coupled with the smell it's really overwhelming. My friend keeps a bottle of vics that he rubs under his nose for the "bad" cases as well as disposable suits that get cremated with those bodies. Water victims are the worst. Salt water just turns everything to mush. Some cases involve old people who don't have any friends or relatives that may have been dead for over a month before they are found like a nieghbor might see flies gathering on the windows and the mail is piled up. My friend says he litterally needs a shovel for those. Some are homeless people that die behind shopping centers or gass stations. Before we left, he told me that the mindset he carries everyday is that the bodies are not people anymore. They are just the shells that need to be taken care of and disposed of. If God made us from dust, then it's like mud and I'm just mopping it up. When I put it in that perspective FIRST, it wasn't so bad. When I went with him that night I held my cool up until we went back to the morgue and I saw about 5 small children on a table. That just tore my heart out as I have children of my own. Some infants were found in dumpsters and the naturel elements got to them and some were horribly mutilated from car crashes. He told me, "You never get used to that." I didn't really sleep that night ... or the next. I can see why he just wants to come by the studio and play drums or bass for hours sometimes. When you look into this guys eyes, he's just seen too much. Love ya Danny! All Rights Reserved. |

Moderator | No problem. I was just thinking of that time tonight before I saw this topic. I have to go to a funeral tommorrow night for a two year old.
Cancer. It's a B@*ch. I'm drawing his portrait tonight so I can give to his family. I'll post it in the Arist Hangout a little later tonight. I'll probably title it "Gavin". All Rights Reserved. |

Very interesting. Nothing like that really grosses me out anymore because of my college anatomy class. I was privileged to disect two cadavers. We only had to deal with their arms. Our assignment was to label the muscles. It freaked me out at first but I eventually got used to it. I had a real "surreal" moment one day when my professor told me to apply some fermaldyhide(?) on a leg that he had stored. I took the leg, they guy must have been 6'6", and took it out of the plastic. I started applying the liquid while trying to balance it. I then realized, Oh My God. I'm holding on to a severed human leg. It took me a minute to regain my composure.

My mother called her stiff in medical school "Mr. Green", because the formaldehyde gave him that special glow.

I have a great interest in forensics too. Would love to get into the molecular genetics side of things. I love reading criminal psychology books too. The pics are a bit.....I dunno how to describe them I'll leave graffiti where you've never been kissed
